Hidden among the rolling hills of Cilento National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site in southern Italy, is Convento Francescano, a unique boutique hotel set within a beautifully restored 14th-century monastery. Surrounded by ancient stone walls and peaceful gardens, this place offers a rare blend of history, spirituality, and contemporary comfort.
The monastery was founded in 1320 to house a sacred relic; pilgrims travelled here for centuries in search of reflection and peace. That atmosphere of quiet contemplation still lingers. Walking through the cloisters, with their stone arches and sunlit courtyard, feels as though time has gently slowed down.
During the renovation, the historic character of the monastery was carefully preserved, while a refined contemporary design was introduced. Natural stone walls, terracotta floors, and vaulted ceilings are combined with furniture from renowned Italian design brands such as Poltrona Frau, Molteni, B&B Italia, and Unopiù. Vintage pieces from local artisans and custom-made sofas and lighting add a personal and authentic touch.
The 7 rooms (each for 2 guests) are designed as serene retreats, where freestanding bathtubs, natural materials, and soft lighting create a calm atmosphere that invites complete relaxation.
Dining at Convento Francescano’s restaurant (Osteria del Convento) is a special experience. Led by chef Patrizia Portolano, the osteria celebrates the authentic cuisine of southern Italy, using ingredients from the monastery garden and the surrounding region. With only sixteen seats in the cloister, each evening feels intimate and personal. In one of the original monastery spaces, you’ll find a Finnish sauna, while heated baths in winter and a beautiful stone pool overlooking the valley invite deep relaxation. Every corner of the monastery encourages you to slow down, breathe deeply, and simply enjoy your surroundings.
A stay at Convento Francescano also offers a chance to discover the traditions of Cilento. You can join cooking workshops, olive oil and wine tastings, guided walks in the national park, or cultural tours through villages and archaeological sites. Pilates classes, art workshops, and visits to local farms allow you to experience Cilento in an authentic way.
