Indulge yourself in Catalonia, the Tuscany of Spain!
The Dutch owners, an interior architect and a stylist, constructed this villa on the foundations of an old ceramics factory. Forn Petit is Catalonian for ‘small ovens’. The two monumental lime kilns were preserved; one of them has gained a second life as a pleasantly cool pantry while the other one encases the robust steel staircase that leads to the upstairs level.
The house was completely remodeled and expanded; the former outside walls have become the inside walls, united by a brand new roof. The use of steel and tone give the house that bold, rugged appearance, without diminishing its luxurious and comfortable appeal. The preservation of the original construction is superbly demonstrated by a steel winding staircase that was constructed into the old lime kiln; a smart combination of historic awareness and functionality! The kitchen work top was constructed out of old wood from India, which underwent an extensive treatment with bees wax and green soap. The modern, stainless steel fridge nicely contrasts the robust outside wall of the former factory.
The furnishings are personal designs by the owners; the wheels under the open wooden cabinet in the kitchen, come from the old factory’s industrial carts that were used to transport the finished ceramic items. Inside, the rooms are all openly connected and divided based upon their main functionalities; cooking, eating, sleeping, reading and lounging. A centerpiece of the open kitchen is the huge, robust cooking island, also a personal design by the owners. The kitchen is fully equipped and has a Nespresso coffee maker (don’t forget to take along Nespresso cups). The house has several other modern gadgets, like an excellent docking station, Wi-Fi and a TV which even has some foreign channels. The eye catchers of the living room are two large tables; a reading table with a bookcase for long hours of reading pleasure and a second, dining/living table; this is the spot where the owners share their passion for lavish dinners and fine wine with their family and friends. The owner lent her personal signature to the interior design with carefully picked, faded-color carpets (some of them self-designed) and other attractive details throughout the villa.
The four bedrooms are located on the first floor; they share a minimalist-style bathroom which has a shower, toilet and washbasin. The master bedroom has its own walk-in shower and every bedroom has its own washbasin; a second bathroom with a shower and toilet is located at ground level.
During the summer months, the conservatory is a delightful spot to enjoy the light streaming in through the glass roof as well as the view of the garden through the open French doors. In wintertime, the cozy spot near the open fire place is the perfect place to read a book accompanied by a good glass of wine.
The large garden has everything you need for lavish outdoor living. The large dining table next to the outdoor kitchen (with a BBQ) invites you to diners ‘al fresco’. After sunset the lighting in the garden lends a magical touch to the entire setting. During the heat of summer, you can cool of in the swimming pool or take a refreshing outdoor shower. Other garden highlights are the various seating and lounge areas, so everyone can choose just the right spot to lay back and relax.
