Meet the people behind the place: Maison du Soleil

Tucked away in the unspoiled landscapes of the Ardèche, Maison du Soleil is a home shaped by a love for design, travel and simple, beautiful living. Created by Eva, an architect with a refined eye for detail, the house reflects a life inspired by different cultures and a deep appreciation for natural materials. What began as a search for a place of their own became a carefully curated retreat filled with light, warmth and personal stories.

What is the name of your accommodation?

Maison du Soleil

Could you introduce yourself and share a bit about your life, such as your interests, hobbies, or background?

I’m Eva, an architect and interior designer. My family and I love to travel and explore new homes, countries, and cultures. Food plays a big role for us, and discovering new flavors is one of the best ways to truly experience a place. One of our favorite hobbies is gardening in the beautiful garden of our holiday home, which helps us relax and unwind from our everyday work life.

How did your property become part of your life? When did it happen, and what inspired or motivated you to take it on?

During COVID, we still wanted to travel, but it was very difficult to find accommodation, and prices were extremely high. So we decided to look for our own holiday property in one of our favorite countries. After nearly three years of searching, we finally found our dream home in the Ardèche.

What was the process of creating your property like? Tell us about renovating, furnishing, or styling it.

We had the best real estate agents by our side, who supported us wonderfully throughout the process. We renovated the house, including completely redesigning the bathrooms and giving the interior a neutral finish to better highlight the art and décor.

The interior design is a unique blend of Mediterranean and Nordic styles with a touch of South African flair, which is quite unusual for the south of France and attracts many design lovers. Natural materials play an important role, with various types of wood creating a warm and cozy atmosphere. The house also features handcrafted elements, such as a large wall in the hallway decorated with handmade tiles from Portugal.

What makes your property truly special to you? Do you have any favorite spots, cherished memories, or personal touches that make it dear to your heart?

The house has been designed with a great deal of love and passion and truly reflects who we are, as we value high quality and sustainable design. Personally, I have many favorite spots. Really, the entire house feels special to me.

There are also carefully selected details throughout, such as artwork I bought at a market in Cape Town. Some pieces come from local studios, including the handmade wall lamps, which add a unique and personal touch.

How would you describe the atmosphere and interior of your property?

The atmosphere is warm, inviting, and cozy. The house is filled with natural light throughout every season, which is also the inspiration behind its name, Maison du Soleil. Every detail has been designed to make guests feel at home.

Are there any sustainable or eco-friendly applications associated with your property that you are proud of?

We converted the pool to a saltwater system, which is significantly healthier and more environmentally friendly.

What motivated or inspired you to rent your property to guests?

Since our son is still in school, we can only come during the holidays. We felt it was a shame to leave the house empty so often, so we wanted others to have the chance to enjoy it as well.

What can guests expect when staying at your accommodation? Share the experience, the highlights, and perhaps the best compliment you’ve received from past guests.

Most guests enjoy the peace and the beautiful natural surroundings, with charming villages nearby. The pool and sun terrace are perfect for relaxing, and many also love spending time having a BBQ in the garden. From the upper floor, guests can take in the stunning mountain views and appreciate the many small details throughout the house.

What do you hope guests will take away from their stay, and do you have any special tips or recommendations to make their holiday unforgettable?

Guests should simply feel comfortable and enjoy quality time with family or friends. I have plenty of tips to share, but that would go beyond the scope here, so I’m always happy to be contacted directly.
