Welcome to The Claywood Factory, a unique artistic oasis in the beautiful Belgian Ardennes, run by Kristien Geurts and Hans Van der Veken. In this interview, they share about their special accommodation, a former farm building that they have transformed into a modern guesthouse by hand. Discover how art, nature, and tranquility come together in this beautiful place full of character and charm.

Before we dive into the details, could you please briefly introduce yourself and any family members? What are your names, ages, place of residence, and what is the name of your accommodation?

It is our pleasure to introduce ourselves: Kristien Geurts and Hans Van der Veken, the proud owners and artists of The Claywood Factory, located in the heart of the "Hautes Ardennes." This artistic space is situated at Courtil 102, 6671 Gouvy, Belgium.

We would love for you to share a bit more about yourselves with our customers. Can you tell us about your interests, hobbies, work, family, or vacations?

The Factory and its artists: "The Factory" is located in the heart of the Belgian Ardennes, near Vielsalm and Houffalize. Twenty years ago, we purchased this beautiful farmhouse. The restoration took just as long, transforming the building into a contemporary space. In the barn, we have set up small workshops for woodturning and ceramics. In our gallery, we present an overview of our artistic work, including paintings, ceramics, and wood art. Design is central to Kristien’s work as an interior architect. Her ceramic work carries a pure and sober mark, with natural colors and rough textures that contrast with contemporary architecture. Hans' work primarily consists of abstract color compositions, inspired by his background as a landscape architect. His impressions of nature are evident in his creations, as well as his work as a self-taught woodturner. Together, we form a perfect balance between art and craftsmanship.

When and how did this accommodation come into your life, and what motivated you to make it part of your life?

Twenty years ago, we were looking for a small weekend getaway to escape the hectic daily life. We quickly laid our eyes on this authentic farmhouse, built in the 1850s from local slate with typical brick window frames. What started as a small weekend project quickly grew into a true challenge that ultimately became a lifelong endeavor.

Can you tell us more about the process of renovating and furnishing your accommodation?

During the renovation, we wanted to preserve the original character of the farmhouse. The farmhouse is divided into four large sections: living space, cow barn, hayloft, and small livestock stalls. The renovation took twenty years, primarily in our free time, with most of the work done by ourselves. In the first phase, we renovated our living space, and in the second phase, the barn was transformed into an art gallery with an exclusive guest accommodation for two people, named "The Suite." This space radiates pure simplicity and offers guests an oasis of calm.

On a personal level, what makes this accommodation so special to you? Are there any special memories or moments that make it particularly dear to you?

Due to the long and intensive renovation, the farmhouse holds enormous emotional value for us. We have poured our heart and soul into achieving this end result, and the outcome is a place that is authentically preserved with great care. Every corner of the building reminds us of the challenges and satisfaction of the restoration.

How would you describe the atmosphere and interior of your accommodation?

The Claywood Factory is a modern artistic oasis, a warm and comfortable space filled with vintage design and unique artworks. It is a place where art and architecture come together harmoniously, with a sense of calm and serenity.

What part of your accommodation is your favorite and why?

Our favorite part is undoubtedly "The Suite." It is designed to provide maximum comfort to guests, where they can fully relax and quickly leave the busy daily life behind.

What makes the location of your accommodation unique and special?

The Factory is located in a small village in the "Hautes Ardennes," surrounded by forests and farmland. The untouched nature here offers endless opportunities for walking and cycling, and there is little tourism, allowing you to explore the surroundings in complete peace.

Are there sustainable or eco-friendly practices associated with your accommodation that you are proud of?

We have implemented various sustainable measures during the renovation, including the use of recycled materials and minimizing our ecological footprint, but it is primarily the respect for nature and the preservation of the farmhouse's authentic character that is close to our hearts.
