The Cyclades through the eyes of Manos

As someone born in Greece and living in Athens, the Cyclades are, to me, the very heart of the Greek summer. No season feels complete without visiting at least one island. For years I’ve been traveling through this island group—sometimes for quick getaways, other times for long summers—and every time, I feel that familiar, elegant sense of coming home. Recently, I visited several accommodations across different islands for Nice2stay, and once again I was struck by the rhythm, the beauty, and the simplicity of island life.

"The Cyclades are simplicity with style, tradition with elegance. Time slows down here—and that’s exactly why I keep coming back."

Why the Cyclades Are So Beloved

What keeps drawing me back is the light. That unmistakable Cycladic light that makes everything glow in shades of white and blue. The atmosphere is both understated and stylish: a design restaurant next to a grandmother hanging out her laundry in the sun. It feels real, unpretentious. And that’s what makes these islands so special.

The people are warm, deeply rooted in their traditions, yet always open and effortlessly elegant. Celebrate a local panigiri (village festival) on August 15th and you’ll understand exactly what I mean: music, dancing, and hospitality are part of daily life here.

My Favorite Islands
  • Milos
A surreal island with moon-like landscapes, colorful rock formations, and beaches for every mood. Perfect for those who love nature and adventure.

  • Paros
A beautiful balance of lively villages, surf culture, and Cycladic charm. Naoussa in the evening is magical (just avoid peak hours).

  • Santorini
An icon, but with more depth than you might expect. Hike from Oia to Imerovigli and soak in the views. The wine culture and artistic spirit are just as remarkable as the vistas.

  • Naxos
Generous, green, and full of contrast. From tall mountains and traditional villages to long sandy beaches and local farms. Don’t miss a day trip to the Small Cyclades.

  • Syros
The capital of the Cyclades, where neoclassical elegance meets authentic island life. Ermoupoli is a city full of stories, and Ano Syros adds an extra layer of charm.

Experiences I Recommend
  • Hike from Oia to Imerovigli in Santorini for breathtaking views.

  • Rent a boat in Milos to discover secluded beaches.

  • Wander the narrow streets of Naxos and taste local cheese, olives, and honey.

  • Visit Koufonisia for a day trip to the bluest water you’ve ever seen.

Flavors of the Cyclades

Every meal here is an experience. Try loukoumades with honey, tomatokeftedes (from Santorini), fresh fish, grilled octopus, and cheeses like xinotyro, malaki, or the graviera from Naxos. And don’t forget a glass of Assyrtiko – a local wine that pairs perfectly with the salty sea breeze.

Tips from Manos
  • Go island hopping: 2–3 days per island is enough to get a feel.

  • Book ferries well in advance during high season.

  • Rent a car to discover hidden beaches.

  • Wake up early or dine late to avoid crowds.

  • Pack something warm – the wind can surprise you, even in July.

  • Don’t chase quantity – the magic is in the slow pace.

  • Visit a small family-run restaurant and let yourself be surprised by the food.

In Closing

The Cyclades are a place where time fades and experience becomes everything. Whether you come for culture, beaches, food, or peace – each island has its own rhythm and soul. And that’s exactly what Nice2stay is all about.
