Meet the people behind the place - Casa Amendoeira

This interview offers an inside look at Casa Amendoeira, a charming property in Portugal's Algarve region, owned by the Hestermann family from Düsseldorf, Germany. Till (39), Birthe (42), and their son Pepe (9) share their love for Portugal, sparked by Till's childhood memories. With a passion for design and architecture, they have transformed Casa Amendoeira into a unique getaway, blending traditional Portuguese charm with contemporary aesthetics. Here, the Hestermanns discuss their journey, the property's renovation, and the unforgettable experiences awaiting guests at Casa Amendoeira.

Before we dive into the details, could you briefly introduce yourself (and if relevant also your family members | name, age, place of residence)?

We are a German family from Düsseldorf. Till Hestermann (39 years), Birthe Hestermann (42 years), Pepe Hestermann (9 years).

We would love to share a bit about you as a person with our customers. Would you like to tell us more about yourself? For example: your interests, free time activities, work, family, holidays?

In his childhood, Till often spent his summer vacations in Portugal with his aunt, who lived there for 20 years, and has since learned to love the country and infected his wife and child with it. Besides the love for Portugal/Algarve, our second passion is design, architecture, interior, and especially beautiful vacation homes.

When and in what way did this property come into your life and what motivated you to make it a part of your life?

We found the house through popular real estate websites in Portugal. We had viewed a selection of five houses in the Algarve in 2021 and immediately fell in love with Casa Amendoeira. The typical farmhouse with the blue shutters, its spacious garden, and beautiful sunsets immediately enchanted us.

Can you tell us more about the process of renovating and furnishing your property?

Before we even found the house, we followed Studio Arte, architects from Portimao, on Instagram. They have similar houses in their portfolio that came very close to our dream house. Mestre Construtivo, a German builder who emigrated to the Algarve 22 years ago, implemented the plans from Studio Arte excellently and efficiently, so that the renovation was completed within 14 months of purchase. Some of the furniture and decoration were imported from Germany, while other pieces were purchased from selected stores in the Algarve.

How would you describe the atmosphere and interior of your property?

A mix of old and new. Nice room climate due to the very high ceilings, thick walls, and old typical tiles. Because the house is on a slope, you have a beautiful view of the valley and mountains.

Which part of your property do you love the most, and why?

We love the sheltered terrace with the old medlar tree that provides natural shade. The renovated blue window blinds provide a beautiful setting.

What makes the location where your accommodation is located unique and special?

It is rural, but you can be in the city (Loulé or São Brás) in 10 minutes and at the sea in 25 minutes.

What motivated or inspired you to rent your property to guests?

We are very happy when our guests feel comfortable and appreciate the design. It was also important to us to offer accommodation that is not too large, making it attractive for smaller families. We ourselves were always on the lookout for such accommodation.

Can you share the best compliment you've received from a guest? What do you hope guests will take away or remember most from their stay in your accommodation?

The house had a very central and prime location. The decoration and atmosphere of the house were excellent and atmospheric. Also, the house manager, Anna, was very friendly and helpful. All in all, we found our stay very pleasant! Highly recommended!
