Could you tell us a bit about yourself and your family, including names, ages, and where you live? Additionally, could you provide the names of your accommodation(s)?
My name is Carlos Fernandes. Together with my partner Nuno Lopes, we run a charming accommodation called Casa Modesta. It is located in the beautiful Ria Formosa region and holds a special meaning for us, as it reflects our family’s history and our love for this area.
Could you share more about yourself? For example, your interests, hobbies, work, family, and vacations?
I have a deep passion for hospitality and a strong interest in travel design. In my free time, I enjoy exploring new destinations, learning about different cultures, and appreciating the beauty of nature. I also love spending time with my family, creating unforgettable memories through travel or simply at home.
When and how did this accommodation become a part of your life, and what motivated you to make it a significant part of your life?
Casa Modesta has been a part of my life since childhood; it was originally built in the 1940s by my great-grandparents. This property was more than just a house; it was our family home, a place filled with cherished memories. The decision to transform it into an accommodation was driven by our desire to honor our family heritage. We worked with my sister’s architectural firm, PAR Plataforma de Arquitectura, to breathe new life into the space while preserving its historic essence.
Could you tell us more about the renovation and design process of your accommodation?
Renovating Casa Modesta was a heartfelt project, led by my sister’s architectural vision at PAR. Every detail was carefully considered to blend modern comfort with our family’s history. We aimed to respect the traditional architecture while incorporating contemporary elements to enhance the guest experience.
What makes your accommodation truly special to you on a personal level? Are there specific memories or moments that make it dear to you?
This house is steeped in my personal history; I grew up here with my parents, grandparents, and siblings. The laughter and love shared within these walls make it a treasure trove of memories. Restoring Casa Modesta was a tribute to my grandparents and the life they built here, allowing us to preserve their legacy and let others experience the warmth of a true home.
How would you describe the atmosphere and interior of your accommodation?
Casa Modesta showcases excellent architecture and design that resonates with the memories embedded in the house. The interior reflects a harmonious blend of modern elegance and traditional charm, creating an inviting atmosphere that encourages relaxation and connection with family and nature.
Which parts of your accommodation are the most beloved to you, and why?
I have a particular fondness for the building’s design, especially the beautiful staircase leading to the terraces. It’s a masterpiece that serves not only a functional purpose but also adds to the aesthetic appeal of the property, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape.
What makes the location of your accommodation unique and special?
Our location is truly exceptional, as it is seamlessly integrated into the Ria Formosa Natural Park. This natural haven offers a breathtaking backdrop and a range of outdoor activities, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the beauty of the local environment.
Are there any sustainable or eco-friendly practices associated with your accommodation that you are particularly proud of?
The architectural approach of Casa Modesta, designed by PAR, focuses on blending with the cultural and emotional landscape. This means that not only does the construction meet high environmental standards in terms of energy use and guest comfort, but the solutions also reinterpret local and ancestral architecture. We use locally produced materials, such as terracotta tiles and red limestone, and have reused old building elements. Casa Modesta has achieved an A+ environmental performance level and won the award for Best Green Practices Hotel in Europe and the Mediterranean. We’re proud to contribute to sustainable tourism while offering an authentic, eco-friendly experience.
What inspired or motivated you to open your accommodation to guests?
Our motivation to open Casa Modesta to guests came from a desire to preserve its identity and heritage while promoting sustainable tourism. We believe in sharing the beauty and history of our family home, offering visitors an authentic experience rooted in the past for a better future.
Could you paint a vivid picture of the overall experience someone can expect when staying at your accommodation?
Imagine waking up to the sound of birds singing, enjoying a delicious breakfast, relaxing in the garden, having a light lunch by the pool, and then taking an eco-trail walk to the village. Perhaps you’ll end the day with a boat tour to the islands, followed by a blind-menu dinner with us. It’s a serene experience, full of relaxation and a deep connection with nature.
How does your accommodation stand out from others? What unique features or qualities make it a one-of-a-kind experience for guests?

It’s where sustainability and exquisite design meet, offering guests a unique oasis where they can enjoy organic cuisine and local beauty. Our commitment to the environment and local culture creates an extraordinary experience that is hard to find elsewhere.
