Discover the nicest hiking trails in the Algarve
The Algarve is famous for its golden beaches, dramatic cliffs, and charming villages – but did you know it’s also a true hiker’s paradise? Whether you enjoy relaxed coastal walks or challenging treks through the hills, this southern region of Portugal offers a surprising variety of landscapes best explored on foot.
1. The Seven Hanging Valleys Trail (Sete Vales Suspensos)
A classic among Algarve hiking routes. This 6-kilometre trail runs from Praia da Marinha to Praia de Vale Centeanes, guiding you past towering cliffs, hidden caves, and jaw-dropping viewpoints. Don’t forget your camera – the ocean views here are absolutely breathtaking.
2. Rota Vicentina – The Fishermen’s Trail
For the more adventurous hiker, the Rota Vicentina is a must. This long-distance coastal trail on the Algarve’s west coast offers rugged nature, deserted beaches, and a deep sense of peace. The section between Odeceixe and Zambujeira do Mar is especially loved by those seeking the wild, untouched side of Portugal.
3. Via Algarviana
This inland route stretches from Alcoutim, near the Spanish border, all the way to Cabo de São Vicente, the southwestern tip of Europe. The full route spans around 300 kilometres, but you can easily walk shorter sections. Along the way, you’ll pass through quiet villages, cork oak forests, and rolling hills – a side of the Algarve many visitors never get to see.
4. Pontal da Carrapateira
A short but stunning circular route of around 5 kilometres, this trail follows one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in western Algarve. You’ll walk along clifftops with panoramic ocean views, sand dunes, and occasionally a herd of goats or donkeys. A perfect walk to enjoy at sunset.
5. Monchique Mountains
Looking for altitude? Head to the green heart of the Algarve: the Monchique mountain range, with its highest peak, Foia. Here, you’ll hike through eucalyptus forests, past springs and through traditional villages. The paths are steeper, but the sweeping views over the region make every step worthwhile.
