Basque Country & Atlantic coast: The art of coastal living
From Hossegor in the north down through Biarritz, Guéthary and Saint-Jean-de-Luz to the Spanish border, the Atlantic coast of southwestern France is one of Europe's most treasured shores. Wild Atlantic breaks, elegant seaside towns, hidden coves and some of the finest food on the continent, all within an hour's drive of each other. Wilder and more relaxed than the Mediterranean, this is a coastline deeply connected to its own culture and traditions, with a slower, more generous rhythm of life.
We recently travelled through the region ourselves, visiting new Nice2stay locations and rediscovering some of our favourite places along the way. This is our guide to the coast we love.
This coast is where European surfing began. The Atlantic swells that roll in from the open ocean have been drawing wave riders for decades, and today the water from Hossegor to Hendaye offers some of the most varied and celebrated surf in the world. From powerful beach breaks to long, rolling point waves, there is something here for everyone, whether you are taking your first lesson together or chasing the biggest swells of the season.
Hossegor
A small town where surf culture meets Landes pine forest. Golden sands, powerful breaks and a town with an easy warmth that welcomes everyone, from seasoned surfers to families simply happy to be beside the sea.
Biarritz
Where Grande Plage's timeless seaside grandeur pairs with the legendary Côte des Basques, where families and longboarders have shared the waves since the 1950s. Stay for the restaurants, the market and that seafront promenade as the evening light softens over the water.
Guéthary
The west coast's best-kept secret, and one of our favourite places to stay. A clifftop village with a tiny port, world-class surf at Parlementia and views that stretch all the way to the Pyrenees.
Saint-Jean-de-Luz
This is where the holiday finds its rhythm. Sheltered, gentle bathing for little ones, a beautiful harbour, painted facades and the kind of terrace lunch that stretches lazily into the afternoon.
