Casa Cattura is the second home of Peter Vuijk and Lian Barentsen, who turned their love for Italy into a charming holiday home on a peaceful hillside, surrounded by olive trees and silence.
What began as a renovation project after a fire is now a spacious, modern retreat with traditional touches, a large private pool and sweeping views. A place to relax, unwind and experience the pure essence of Italy — just as Peter and Lian love to do themselves.
We are Peter Vuijk (63) and Lian Barentsen (61). We live in Heinkenszand, in the province of Zeeland in the Netherlands. We have two children, Paola and Sven, who have since moved out.
We are both still working. Peter runs his own management and consultancy company, while Lian works as a policy advisor for a municipality. We love playing golf together and regularly spend time at our house in Italy, often combining remote work with a bit of holiday.
We’ve loved spending time in Italy for many years, and had long dreamed of owning a place of our own there. In 2018, with the help of a Dutch real estate agent living in Italy, we visited six properties and ultimately chose this one. The beautiful region, the stunning location of the house and its potential to become a little paradise made the decision easy. We’ve never looked back.
Shortly after signing the preliminary purchase agreement, we received the news that a fire had broken out in the house. We decided to go ahead with the purchase anyway, even though what was supposed to be a small paint job turned into a complete renovation project. By September 2019, we were still able to celebrate our housewarming.
We chose to preserve some original elements and combined them with a modern, practical interior. The house is located along a quiet lane and sits on a large plot of land that includes its own olive grove. It also features a spacious private swimming pool.
The very first impression of the house already convinced us. The peaceful setting and the spectacular views sealed the deal. The house has a wonderful sense of space, and transforming it into our own style was an incredibly rewarding experience.
The exterior is traditional, based on the style of a typical Marche farmhouse. Inside, it’s modern — with beautiful exposed wood ceilings on the upper floor. There’s a fully equipped kitchen and air conditioning in every bedroom. Outside, you’ll find various terraces and quiet sitting areas. The 17-metre-long pool is surrounded by a large sun terrace and a newly renovated pergola.
It’s not just one feature — it’s the overall harmony of the interior and exterior that makes it the perfect holiday home.
The rolling hills and the peaceful setting. Plus, the house is only half an hour’s drive from the sea.
Yes — the house was fully insulated during the renovation. We also use water from our own well to irrigate the garden, helping to preserve drinking water during the dry summer months.
We only use the house ourselves for about ten weeks a year, and it felt like a shame not to share it with others during the rest of the year.
Guests have full access to a spacious home, a large garden, and a private pool. It’s ideal for a big family, two families, or a group of friends. Life in the countryside is wonderfully peaceful — sometimes all you hear are the birds, with the nearest neighbours 450 metres away.
As mentioned before: the space, the silence, the views, the comfort of the home, and the private pool — it all comes together to create something special.
That the kitchen was so well-equipped, it even included a real stone teapot!
That it’s a place where you can fully relax — without ever needing to leave the house.
Yes — our guestbook is full of useful suggestions, not just for using the house but also for visiting nearby towns, beaches, restaurants, markets and more.
