Casa di Fichi is the beloved Italian retreat of Hans and Inger from Rotterdam. After years of camping, renting homes, and cycling through Italy — and later, Asia — they found their perfect spot here: overlooking a nearby village, with the mountains behind them and the sea just a short drive away.
What started with a real estate agent claiming “a few coats of paint” would do, turned into a full renovation focused on light, space and comfort. Today, Casa di Fichi is a spacious and stylish home of 340 m², surrounded by 1.3 hectares of land. It’s a place where guests don’t just enjoy the space, but also the special atmosphere that lives in and around the house.
We are Hans and Inger from Rotterdam. We have two grown-up children and occasionally a “borrowed dog.” We love cycling — in the Netherlands, in Italy, and on faraway adventures.
We’re both real Italy lovers. In the past, we camped a lot with the kids and later moved on to renting holiday homes — and even for skiing, Italy was always our favourite. About ten years ago, we both decided to step away from work, and ever since, we’ve enjoyed taking longer cycling trips in Asia during the winter months.
Over 12 years ago, we started looking for a house in Italy. We explored all over Tuscany, but in the end, it just felt too touristy for us. We’d been to Le Marche twice before and had loved it — the decision was quickly made. Still, it took another year and a half before we finally found our dream spot.
The real estate agent pitched it as “just needs some paint.” In reality, we stripped the entire house, removed walls and created a bright, open space. Our contractor was a fantastic find — thoughtful and always on schedule. The renovation was completed within four months. We chose most of the furniture in the Netherlands and had it shipped over.
The very first time we walked in with the agent, we looked at each other and just knew: this is the one. The house has a wonderful warmth and charm, and its location is perfect. As the previous owner once said: private, but never isolated.
Spacious, modern, cosy and incredibly comfortable.
That’s a tough one, but sitting at the outdoor table looking out over the village is truly unique. It never gets old — the view changes every day.
We really have everything within easy reach. The mountains at our back, and the sea only 20 km away.
We wanted to share this amazing place with others and let them enjoy it as much as we do.
The house offers 340 m² of living space, with exceptionally large rooms. We could have added more bedrooms, but we’re happy we didn’t — the sense of space is part of the experience. The surrounding land covers 1.3 hectares, so there’s plenty of room both inside and out.
The space, the location, and the comfort.
One guest began her review with: “Where do I begin? This is heaven on earth.”
The special atmosphere in and around the house. If it’s true that a house can have a good soul, then this one definitely does.
You shouldn’t leave without visiting the best pizzeria in Le Marche. In the medieval village of Mondavio, you’ll find Osteria della Rocca — hosted by Andrea, who genuinely wants every guest to feel welcome and well taken care of.
