The best time to visit Trentino-Alto Adige
Trentino-Alto Adige is a destination that changes beautifully with the seasons. Spring brings flowering valleys and quiet mountain trails, summer is made for alpine adventures and crystal-clear lakes; autumn paints the vineyards and forests in golden hues; while winter transforms the region into a snowy paradise. The best time to visit depends entirely on the kind of holiday you're looking for.
Summer, from June to August
Summer is when Trentino-Alto Adige truly comes alive. The Dolomites reveal their spectacular hiking trails, alpine meadows burst into bloom, and mountain lakes such as Lago di Braies, Lake Carezza and Lake Molveno sparkle beneath clear blue skies. Days are warm without becoming excessively hot, making this the perfect season for hiking, cycling, swimming and enjoying long lunches on sunny terraces. It is also the busiest time of year, particularly in the most famous mountain villages, so travelling just outside the peak weeks offers a quieter experience.
Early autumn, from September to October
Many consider autumn to be the most beautiful season in Trentino-Alto Adige. The forests glow with shades of gold and red, vineyards prepare for harvest, and crisp mountain air makes every walk feel refreshing. Temperatures remain pleasant, hiking conditions are excellent, and the summer crowds have largely disappeared. South Tyrol's wine villages come alive during the traditional Törggelen season, when local wines, roasted chestnuts and seasonal dishes celebrate the harvest.
Spring, from April to May
Spring arrives first in the valleys, where orchards around Merano and Bolzano blossom while the higher peaks still wear a blanket of snow. It is one of the quietest times to explore the region, with pleasant temperatures for sightseeing, cycling and gentle walks. As nature awakens, waterfalls are at their fullest, alpine pastures begin turning green, and picturesque villages slowly come back to life after winter.
Winter, from November to March
Winter transforms Trentino-Alto Adige into one of Europe's most enchanting mountain destinations. Snow-covered peaks, cosy alpine villages and world-class ski resorts create a magical atmosphere, while festive Christmas markets fill towns such as Bolzano, Merano and Bressanone with lights, local delicacies and seasonal traditions. Whether you're skiing in the Dolomites, relaxing in a mountain spa or simply enjoying the peaceful winter scenery, this season offers a completely different side of the region.
