Best Places to Visit in Northern Portugal: Where history, nature and culture come together

Northern Portugal is often overlooked, and that’s a shame. It’s a region packed with personality: think green valleys, medieval cities, hillside vineyards and charming villages tucked between forests and rivers. The pace is slower, the prices are kinder, and the mix of culture, nature and food is spot on. Whether you're in for a weekend break in Porto or a road trip through lesser-known landscapes, this region ticks all the boxes.
Here’s a selection of our favourite places to visit — perfect for those who love good design, local life, and a touch of adventure.

Porto
For architecture lovers, wine enthusiasts and creative city vibes

Portugal’s second-largest city has everything: history, a creative edge, and a stunning riverside location. The Ribeira district is picture-perfect, but make time to explore beyond. Neighbourhoods like Cedofeita and Bonfim are filled with independent stores, cafés and art spaces. And yes, the port wine cellars on the other side of the river live up to the hype.
What to do:

  • Wine tasting in Vila Nova de Gaia

  • Visit the Igreja de São Francisco (the one with the gold interior)
  • Stroll and snack along Rua das Flores
  • Explore the art and galleries around Rua de Miguel Bombarda
Braga
For history, churches and a local feel

Braga is one of the oldest cities in Portugal and still deeply rooted in tradition. Known as the country’s religious capital, it’s home to dozens of churches and religious festivals — but don’t expect anything dusty or old-fashioned. The city feels fresh and lived-in, with a local market, cafés and walkable streets.
What not to miss:

  • Climbing the monumental staircase to Bom Jesus do Monte
  • Visiting the Sé de Braga, the oldest cathedral in the country
  • Exploring the old town centre
  • Shopping local at the city’s daily market
Guimarães
For cobblestones, castles and compact charm

Guimarães is small, historic and full of character. Known as the birthplace of Portugal, it’s ideal for a day trip or a slow-paced weekend. The entire old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with a castle, winding alleys and pretty plazas where locals hang out. The vibe is lively yet relaxed — especially thanks to the local university.
Highlights:

  • Guimarães Castle and the Palace of the Dukes
  • Lunch or coffee on Largo da Oliveira
  • Exploring the city on foot (everything is close by)
  • Design shops and galleries hidden in historic buildings

Peneda-Gerês National Park
For hikes, hidden villages and wild nature
This is Portugal’s only official national park — and still a bit of a secret. The landscape is dramatic and varied: think mountain peaks, waterfalls, rivers and stone villages that haven’t changed in centuries. Ideal for hiking, swimming in natural pools or just getting away from it all.
Good to know:

  • You’ll need a car to explore freely
  • Base yourself near Soajo or Lindoso for great access
  • Look out for wild Garrano horses and Roman roads
  • Avoid July and August if you want solitude
Douro Valley
For wine, views and peaceful stays

The Douro Valley is one of Europe’s most scenic wine regions, with vineyard terraces carved into steep hills along the Douro River. It’s quiet, slow-paced and perfect for unplugging. Stay in a boutique quinta, taste local port and dry wines, and enjoy the views — especially at sunset.
Things to do:

  • Take a boat ride from Peso da Régua or Pinhão
  • Visit traditional wineries (many are open to visitors)
  • Enjoy long lunches with local wine and olive oil
  • Stay overnight for the full experience
Why Northern Portugal should be on your list

It’s easy to fall for Lisbon or the Algarve, but Northern Portugal has a different kind of charm. It’s quieter, more authentic, and full of moments that feel genuinely local — whether you're sipping wine by the river, hiking through a granite village, or wandering a historic city centre.
At Nice2stay, we love this region for its beautiful mix of culture, food, nature and design. And yes, we have some very special places to stay — from modern casas surrounded by vineyards to boutique properties hidden in the mountains.
