Lago Trasimeno, Umbria: Italy's most underrated lake
Umbria has no coastline, but it has something quietly remarkable: Lake Trasimeno. Fringed with medieval hilltowns, olive groves, and cypress-lined roads, this is one of central Italy's great overlooked pleasures. Life here moves at its own pace, the landscape is gentle and green, and the lake stretches wide and silver in the afternoon light. If you are spending time in Umbria, a day here is not optional.
Start in the hills
Before reaching the water, give yourself a morning in the surrounding hilltowns. Panicale and Città della Pieve are both worth the detour, and neither requires much time to appreciate. Wander through the alleys, step into every church you pass, admire the views over the valley, and take time for a coffee in the piazza. Città della Pieve is home to the narrowest alley in all of Italy, a small detail that says much about the character of these ancient places. Both towns sit close enough to the lake that you feel its presence without quite seeing it, which only adds to the anticipation.
Eat where the locals eat
For lunch, seek out Faliero rather than the restaurants along the waterfront. It is a humble spot, well known among locals and a long-standing favourite with passing truck drivers, which in Italy is the highest possible recommendation for good, honest food. The speciality is torta al testo, a traditional Umbrian griddle bread filled with seasonal vegetables, cheese, or cured meat. The portions are generous, the atmosphere is unpretentious, and the food is exactly what you want after a morning of walking.
An afternoon by the water
From there, the lake is yours. The road that follows the perimeter is unhurried and beautiful, with the water appearing and disappearing between the trees. Stop wherever the view draws you in, find a bench or a stretch of shore, and let the afternoon take its time. End the day in Passignano sul Trasimeno, the most charming of the lakeside towns. Walk along the old harbour, have a coffee, get a gelato, and watch the light change over the water. It is a gentle, easy end to a day well spent.
