Meet the people behind the place: l'Atelier 35

Tucked away in the characterful heart of Montmartre, L’Atelier 35 offers a rare blend of Parisian charm, tranquility, and design. Interior designer Hélène Van Marcke transformed this classic Haussmann apartment into a stylish pied-à-terre, where natural materials, artistic touches, and sweeping views of the Sacré-Cœur come together. A warm, elegant retreat for those who want to experience Paris like a local — with the refinement of a true connaisseur.

Can you briefly introduce yourself?

My name is Hélène Van Marcke, I’m 38 years old and I live between Brussels and Paris.

We’d love to share a bit about you as a person with our guests. Would you tell us a bit more about yourself?

I’m an interior designer and started my career in Paris, where I still run a significant part of my business. But my husband and our two children live in Belgium, so I spend more time there now. I love to travel, am a passionate horse-riding enthusiast, and enjoy many outdoor and sports activities.

When and how did this property come into your life, and what motivated you to make it part of your journey?

After working in Paris for a few years, I found it nearly impossible to rent a place without a French guarantor. Back then, prices in Paris were much more affordable, and since I work in construction, it made sense to buy a place that needed full renovation. The idea was to turn it into an investment property and offer guests an authentic Parisian experience.

Can you tell us more about the renovation and interior design process?

This is actually our second renovation, after a major fire in 2023. The inspiration came from the neighborhood — Montmartre, and especially our street with its north-facing façades and large atelier-style skylights overlooking the Sacré-Cœur, once home to many artists including Pablo Picasso.

We designed the apartment around the technical core (bathroom and kitchen), enclosed in a metal and glass structure inspired by classic Parisian ateliers. This allowed us to maintain a wide-open perspective from the front to the back façade, making the space feel open and flowing.

The front, with its Sacré-Cœur view, is ideal for daytime and evenings. The back, overlooking rooftops and a quiet courtyard, is perfect for working and sleeping. We restored the original mouldings and herringbone oak floors typical of Haussmannian architecture, and added warm, natural materials like Rosso di Masso stone and oak cabinetry.

What makes this property personally special to you? Any memorable moments?

It’s the first property I ever bought, which already makes it very special. Paris is incredibly dear to me, and I’m always excited to return — especially for work. It’s a vibrant mix of cultures, fashion, gastronomy, and energy.

How would you describe the atmosphere and interior of your home?

Warm and eclectic, with a strong Parisian inspiration.

What is your favorite spot in the home, and why?

The Pierre Paulin chair positioned right in front of the Sacré-Cœur view!

What makes the location of your property so unique?

It’s the perfect mix of local charm and light tourism. Montmartre naturally draws visitors, but the Trudaine/Martyrs neighborhood feels like a village within the city. It’s very central and accessible but not overrun with tourists. There are countless great restaurants, cafés, and markets that bring the area to life.

Are there any sustainable or eco-conscious aspects of the property you're proud of?

We exclusively work with Belgian and French materials, accessories, sanitary fittings, and textiles — with the exception of the Italian stone.

What inspired or motivated you to rent your property to guests?

When my children were born, I started spending more time in Belgium, and the apartment was often empty. I began renting it out to friends and family, and soon others started asking as well through word of mouth. During COVID, weekly travel to Paris became impossible, and that’s when the rental side truly began.

How would you describe the experience guests can expect?

A truly Parisian experience: vibrant neighborhoods, sunny or shady terraces to enjoy a café or glass of wine, local markets and shops with fine French products, beautiful avenues to stroll through, and Montmartre just up the stairs with its breathtaking city views.

What makes your property unique compared to others?

It’s designed as a designer’s pied-à-terre — with a comfortable workspace, a calm bedroom, and leafy views toward Montmartre. It offers a serene escape in the middle of a lively area. Many of the small furniture pieces, books, and objects in the home are also available for purchase.

What’s the best compliment you’ve received from a guest?

“A peaceful haven above the trees and rooftops, right in the heart of the city’s energy.”

What do you hope guests take away or remember most from their stay?

Inspiration!
