Rolling hills, wooded river valleys, colorful fields, and small villages define the landscape of South Devon. Set amidst this enchanting natural backdrop, the Secular Retreat looks out over the countryside to the sea. This house is an impressive masterpiece by architect Peter Zumthor, an extraordinary concrete and glass home filled with modern and minimalist design. Concrete walls show continuous stripes that characterize the house both inside and out. Limestone floors have been custom-made and lead to expansive windows overlooking the gardens and surrounding valleys. Carefully crafted wooden surfaces - of apple and cherry wood - provide warmth, alongside brightly colored furniture designed by Zumthor, including the lounge armchairs upholstered in violet fabric and ochre-colored leather. This is Zumthor's only design in the UK.

The house can sleep up to ten people in five bedrooms - each with their own bathroom - which are housed in two separate wings that open onto the generous and light-flooded open-plan living with a bespoke kitchen, lounge around a cozy fireplace and relaxation areas where you can retreat with a book. Outside, enjoy a cup of coffee in the eastern garden or take a stroll among the ancient Monterey pines that surround the house.

A short distance away you can make the most beautiful coastal walks, go cycling amidst the hills and along rivers as well as embark on trips to the charming villages or picturesque beaches - as well for sailing, surfing, and swimming - close by.
