The Algarve through the eyes of Merel Eijsackers
Merel Eijsackers, part of the Nice2stay team, has been visiting the Algarve for years—always with her family, always returning. Not as a tourist, but as a regular guest, someone who recognises the scent of the sea the moment she arrives and could point out her favourite beaches with her eyes closed. For Merel, the Algarve feels like a second home: a place where sun, flavour, nature, and hospitality come together in a wonderfully relaxed rhythm.
“Every time I come back, it feels like coming home. The sun, the sea, the food—everything just feels right. The Algarve keeps surprising us, and yet it always feels familiar.”
What began as a simple family holiday turned into a deep love for the region—from its wild western coast to secluded little coves, from surf spots to quiet mountain villages. Merel’s Algarve is vibrant and full of life, yet also pure and grounded.
The people are warm, the food is exceptional, and the weather is just about perfect. The Algarve invites you to explore—but also to simply be.
My favourite places in the Algarve
-
Lagos
A lively, colourful town where you can still feel the essence of real Portugal. Think authentic restaurants, a buzzing market, and a great base for exploring the region’s most beautiful beaches and villages. The vibe is relaxed, the people are friendly, and the sea views are always magical. -
Sagres
This is the Algarve in its rawest form. Less touristic, more untamed. Picture dramatic cliffs, surfers riding the waves, and a sense of endlessness. It’s perfect for peace seekers, walkers, and those who love the elements. -
Carvoeiro
A charming coastal village with winding streets, whitewashed houses and incredible cliffs. Ideal for a long lunch in the sun or a stroll along the edge of the world. -
Tavira
Timeless and elegant, with cobbled streets, leafy squares and a gentle pace. Tavira invites you to slow down—wander by the river, browse local markets and soak up the beauty of everyday life. -
Portimão
A nice stop for shopping lovers, but also home to a working harbour and plenty of local eateries offering a more authentic taste of Portugal. -
Praia da Marinha
Arguably one of Europe’s most stunning beaches, with golden cliffs and crystal-clear turquoise water. Whether you're here to swim or simply take in the view—this one is unforgettable.
My favourite walks & viewpoints:
-
Ponta da Piedade
A dramatic headland with towering rock formations and turquoise water below. Take your time here—every corner offers a new perspective, and it’s pure magic. -
Seven Hanging Valleys Trail
One of Europe’s most scenic coastal hikes. Cliff paths, secret beaches and panoramic ocean views. Wear good shoes and pack a picnic—this one is worth every step. -
Cabo de São Vicente
The southwesternmost tip of Europe. When the sun dips into the Atlantic here, it feels like the edge of the world. Bring a warm jumper—it gets windy. -
For swimming
Some of my favourite beaches: Praia do Camilo, Praia da Marinha, and Praia de Benagil. Each is unique, but all are breathtaking. -
For hiking
Walk the cliffs around Carvoeiro or explore the Ria Formosa lagoon—peaceful, bird-filled and full of quiet wonder. -
For relaxing in nature
The Monchique Mountains offer a different side of the Algarve: lush, green, and home to thermal springs for the ultimate reset.
My favourite food & restaurants:

-
Picanha – Grilled beef served with rice and beans, simple and delicious.
-
Piri Piri Chicken – Spicy, smoky and a must-try in this region.
-

-
Fresh fish & seafood – Found daily in beach restaurants and local markets.
Top picks:

Arribale – A cosy, traditional Portuguese restaurant. Reservations are essential.
-
Vecchia Milano – Lovely Italian food with a beautiful rooftop terrace.
-
Camilo – Located right at one of the Algarve’s best beaches. Their Piri Piri chicken is legendary (order 24 hours in advance!).
-

-
NoSoloÁgua – A relaxed beach club where a quick drink can easily turn into a full day.
-
Caniço – A unique cliffside restaurant built into a grotto, with a peaceful cove perfect for shaded lounging.
-
Casa do Prego – Tapas, atmosphere, and rooftop views in one of the best spots in town.
Why Nice2stay feels at home here
What you’ll find with us is exactly what’s often missing from the big providers: carefully selected accommodations in places where peace, beauty, and character come together. The Algarve surprises with its diversity – from untouched coves to tranquil mountain villages – and still offers plenty of room for discovery.
We consciously seek out what’s truly special: a villa with a sea view, a stylish village house with a patio, a boutique hotel full of character, a bright apartment with sweeping views, or a charming B&B where you instantly feel at home. Always a place where architecture, nature, and hospitality enhance one another. Often run by local owners or passionate hosts who have taken care of every detail – and welcome you with open arms.
Life moves at a slower pace here, the atmosphere is more personal, and the experience is richer. That’s exactly why this region fits so well with our mission: to travel with intention, and to stay in places that stay with you.
Practical tips
Do:
-
Rent a car to discover hidden beaches and charming inland villages.
-
Visit local markets for fresh produce and regional delicacies.
-
Book a boat tour to the Benagil cave—unmissable.
-
Dine at seafood spots where you pick your fish and watch it grilled to order.
Don’t:
-
Assume everyone speaks English—a few Portuguese words go a long way.
-
Only visit the famous beaches—the magic often lies just around the corner.
-
Go out to dinner in high season without a reservation—you’ll thank us later.
In conclusion
The Algarve is a place that stays with you. Not just for its beaches or its cuisine, but for the way life feels here—easy, generous, and full of sun.
For Merel, it’s a place that always welcomes her home. And maybe, just maybe, it will feel that way for you too.
“I invite you to discover the Algarve—through my eyes, and at your own pace.”
