Antwerp with children: a relaxed city trip full of discoveries

Charming squares, grand facades and a laid-back atmosphere - Antwerp is a city where families instantly feel at home. There’s no need to choose between culture or relaxation, design or play, fine dining or simplicity. Everything blends seamlessly together. Picture cycling along the Scheldt, breakfasting beneath old trees, getting lost in creative neighbourhoods, and enjoying the city together at an easy pace.

Exploring by bike: urban space and family-friendly stops

Antwerp is perfect for discovering by bike. We rented ours at Cyclant, where you'll find everything from sporty bikes to tandems, cargo bikes and children’s bikes – plus helpful, personalised route advice. They mapped out a relaxed tour for us, ideal for a family day out.

The founders of Nice2stay also explored the city this way with their own children of various ages – and were surprised by how easy, fun and versatile Antwerp turned out to be as a family destination.

Our route started at the train station and led us to Park Spoor Noord – a spacious and lively urban park where kids can climb, play, and cool off at the water zone. Meanwhile, we enjoyed a coffee at a summer bar, keeping a relaxed eye on the action.

From there, we cycled to the striking Port House, where modern architecture, wide-open spaces and views over the harbour created a true moment of wonder. We continued along the waterfront on wide, mostly car-free paths, toward ’t Eilandje. Along the way, quiet corners alternated with vibrant city views, and there were plenty of spots to hop off and explore.

We wrapped up the ride in the area around Nationalestraat, Kammenstraat and Kloosterstraat – three neighbourhoods ideal for browsing shops and boutiques. From vintage design and fashion to children’s shops and bookstores, there’s something for everyone. It’s a lovely way to end the day, with a coffee stop or ice cream never far away.

’t Eilandje: water, space and culture

’t Eilandje is one of Antwerp’s most characterful districts. Once a harbour area, it’s now a lively blend of modern architecture, maritime history and open space. The wide quays invite you to stroll or simply sit and watch the water, while kids run freely or skip stones into the dock.

At the heart of the neighbourhood is the impressive MAS (Museum aan de Stroom) – a striking architectural landmark with exhibitions that are visual, interactive and engaging for all ages. At the top, a panoramic terrace offers sweeping views over the city and port – freely accessible to visitors.

Along the marina, you’ll find cosy cafés and waterfront eateries with sunny terraces – perfect for taking a break while the world drifts by. ’t Eilandje offers room to breathe in the heart of the city – with enough variety to linger for hours.

The Jewish district: a neighbourhood full of tradition

Just behind Central Station lies a neighbourhood that feels slightly different: the Jewish quarter, home to a large Orthodox Jewish community. For both children and adults, it’s a fascinating area to explore together – the street scene shifts, people dress differently, and shop windows feature Hebrew signs and kosher treats.

Stroll through the streets and soak up the atmosphere. Some bakeries welcome you in with the scent of sweet pastries, apple cake or freshly filled sandwiches – a tasty and fun way to try something new.

It’s a neighbourhood where time seems to slow down, and tradition is felt in every corner. For children, it’s a chance to encounter a different culture in a very approachable way – right in the middle of the city.

Dining in Antwerp: relaxed and full of flavour

Antwerp’s food scene is both surprising and accessible. At Fiskebar, in the South district, you can enjoy fresh fish in a stylish yet relaxed setting – perfect for a sunny lunch or early dinner on the terrace.

Prefer plant-based? Head to HUMM, where vibrant, globally inspired dishes are served in a bright, contemporary space with a focus on purity and flavour.

Looking for something simple in between? Grab a portion of fries from the chic Frites Atelier by Sergio Herman, or treat yourself to a cinnamon bun and top-quality coffee at Caffènation – a beloved spot in Antwerp’s coffee scene. Polly is another elegant coffee bar, perfect for a quiet moment or a cosy pause.

Start your day slowly at Bar Vert, where you’ll find light dishes, homemade granola, fresh bread and a warm, inviting atmosphere.

For parents: a stylish evening out

For families with older children, Antwerp is ideal for a parents-only evening out. While the kids relax back at your Nice2stay accommodation – pizza and a film, perhaps – parents can head into town for an evening of good food and atmosphere.

A few favourites for a special night out:

Album – Elegant, personal and seasonal
Hiro – Refined Japanese cuisine in an intimate setting
Osaka – Modern and minimalist, with creative Asian flavours
Bar Péché – Contemporary bistro with French influences, perfect for a relaxed evening

Wonder and small discoveries

A firm family favourite is Zoo Antwerpen – a historic city zoo with modern charm, located right next to the grand Central Station. Pair it with a stroll through the Zurenborg district, where beautiful belle époque façades line the streets like an open-air museum.

Also fun for families: a visit to the ModeMuseum (MoMu). Exhibitions are often visual and creatively presented, with plenty to engage even the youngest fashion lovers. Surrounded by stylish boutiques, it’s an unexpected cultural outing with flair.

In the Groen Kwartier, you’ll find Antwerp PAKT – an inspiring hub of urban farming, creative studios and great eateries. Be sure to stop by Bakker Aldo for fresh sourdough or a sweet treat to take away.

A city that stays with you

Antwerp isn’t a city of grand gestures, but of small, memorable moments. An unexpected view, a quiet bench by the Scheldt, a perfectly brewed coffee, or an unplanned afternoon that turns into something special.

For families, it’s a destination that allows for slow travel and meaningful connection. Our accommodations in Antwerp are the perfect match – stylish, comfortable and located right in the rhythm of the city.
