Central Portugal through the eyes of Karlijn

Karlijn first discovered Central Portugal during a work trip with Nice2stay and later returned for a holiday – both times, the region left a lasting impression. From charming villages to rugged coastlines, from colourful tiles to the crashing waves of the Atlantic – this region quickly found its way into her heart.

What began as a trip to visit accommodations turned into a journey of discovery through a land of contrasts: sea and mountains, old and new, lively and serene.

“What keeps drawing me back to Central Portugal is the balance. You’re surrounded by nature and culture, calm and kindness. And always, there’s the sea – close by, powerful, soothing.”

During her trip, Karlijn stayed at the stylish You and the Sea, a place where everything comes together: ocean views, a relaxed atmosphere, and even surf lessons on-site. Her days were spent exploring coastal villages, tasting fresh pulpo at a local taberna, and getting delightfully lost among the castles of Sintra.

Karlijn’s favourite places in Central Portugal
  • Ericeira
A fishing village with a raw elegance. Known as a surf mecca, but also beloved for its laid-back vibe, lively squares and sunsets that set the ocean on fire.

  • Baleal
Small, vibrant, and set right by the sea. Perfect for those who love surfing, cliff walks, and barefoot lunches on the beach. Don’t miss Vestígios do Forte, a viewpoint offering an endless blue horizon.

  • Sintra
Fairytale-like, mysterious and steeped in history. Wander through lush gardens, climb castle towers, and take in the view from Castelo dos Mouros. Sintra isn’t just a town – it’s an experience.

  • Lisbon
Buzzing and full of layers. Stroll through Alfama, find scenic viewpoints like Miradouro de Santa Luzia, and let the city's music, flavours and charm surprise you.

  • Óbidos
A medieval village wrapped in ancient walls. Walk along the ramparts, browse the tiny bookshops and soak in the timeless atmosphere of a place where history is still very much alive.

Why Central Portugal keeps inspiring

Central Portugal isn’t a region that fits neatly into one definition. It’s a place of character, where life seems to move to a slower, more deliberate rhythm.

You could spend your days doing nothing at the beach, wandering alleys lined with azulejos, or hiking into the hills for views of centuries-old castles.

From the nature parks around Sintra to the surf beaches of Ericeira – this is Portugal at its purest: warm, welcoming and wonderfully diverse.

And the food? Think fresh fish like pulpo and bacalhau, served with simplicity and soul. End your meal with a warm Pastel de Nata and a chilled glass of white port.

Why Nice2stay feels at home here

Central Portugal captures everything Nice2stay stands for: authenticity, a sense of connection, and understated style.

Our accommodations in this region are more than just places to sleep. They’re woven into the fabric of the landscape – with sea views, tucked into lively villages or nestled quietly in nature.

Karlijn’s tips for experiencing Central Portugal
  • Mix city and coast
Start your journey in Lisbon, get lost in the alleys of Alfama, then unwind by the sea in Ericeira or Baleal.

  • Visit Sintra early
The castles are magical – and popular. Go early, take your time, and let yourself be enchanted. Two castles are more than enough for one visit.

  • Go surfing – or just watch
Ericeira and Baleal are surf havens. Whether you’re riding the waves or sipping coffee on the promenade, the energy is contagious.

  • Walk the walls of Óbidos
It’s a unique way to see the village. Wear comfy shoes and be mindful with kids – the walls have no railings.

  • Eat where the locals eat
Karlijn’s go-to spots: Taberna do Ganhão and Tribo da Praia in Baleal, or Taberna Sal Grosso in Lisbon – local, tasty, and full of character.

  • Taste the region
Visit a winery like Quinta de Sant’Ana do Gradil for a relaxed afternoon among the vines.

Final thoughts

Central Portugal isn’t a region of grand gestures. It’s a place of quiet discoveries – a viewpoint, a village, a plate of fish by the sea.

Whether you come to surf, hike, explore castles or simply slow down: here, you move to the rhythm of Portugal.

“What brings me back time and again? The sea, the kind people, the old buildings, the tiles, the food. It’s all here – in a setting that makes you want to stay.”

I invite you to experience Central Portugal – through my eyes, and at your own pace.

– Karlijn, Team Nice2stay
