Nestled in a breathtaking location with uninterrupted views and a deep sense of tranquility, the SpronkenHouse is more than just a retreat—it’s a unique architectural masterpiece. We had the pleasure of speaking with Joris Dassen, the owner of this extraordinary property, who shares his personal connection to the house, the vision behind preserving its essence, and the unforgettable experience it offers to guests. From its sustainable innovations to the sense of peace it instills, the SpronkenHouse is a place where nature, design, and relaxation come together in perfect harmony. Read on to discover the story behind this one-of-a-kind sanctuary.
My name is Joris Dassen (47), a single father that lives together with his daughter (4) in the Netherlands (Maastricht). I call the SpronkenHouse our second home (not simply just a vacation home).
I am a very active personality that loves all kinds of outdoor sports like hiking, running, cycling, Kitesurfing and motorcross. This is one of the reasons why I spend a lot of time in the SpronkenHouse, I can do almost all of these sports there.
There are a few artists in my family and one of them (Xander Spronken) created this sculpture. As I am also a investor in very specific real estate (monuments mainly) and I have experience in the hotel industry, it was a logic question from Xander if I would like to be the owner of his creation since he knew I was going to open it up for others to rent and experience his life work. I own the SpronkenHouse since 2018.
I was a process of a few years together with Xander to keep the spirit of the house as pure as possible. For me personally the main goal was to buy all the lands around the house to make sure nobody would build close to it so I could preserve the tranquility and privacy.
The moment I arrive at the property, a real sence of peace falls upon me. A sensation that I never felt in any other place in the world. Also the climate was a huge surprise, I used to live in Los Angeles for 4 years (eternal spring is what they call it there) but the weather at the SpronkenHouse, is even better then what I was used to in Los Angeles!
Very zen.
The property consists of two houses, both are equally beautiful for me.
No light pollution and 35 km of unblocked views! You can clearly see the "milky way" at night.
Yes, I have cut the gas system completely and installed 66 solar panels on the roof together with 64 KWH lithium Ion batteries to provide free energy for the heat pumps of the floor heating of floor cooling/ warm water system /airco's. I also installed an electrical car charger.
The property consists of two houses and I personally just need one of course. Except from that, the property has major maintenance costs and I have a lot of fun renting it to likeminded people who appreciate all the passion that I put into it and creating a memorable experience for my guests.
It depends on the lenght of the stay, for someone who only visits for 3 night the will come to recharge and relax (maybe even use our private chef throughout their stay). For someone who visits for a week or more they will also experience the many things to do like visiting all the beautiful authentic villages all around, do beautiful hikes in the nature preserved areas or for example rent a racebike and start experiencing the mountains around the property (even the famous "Vuelta" passes near the house).
It is truly a unique house (very unique architecture) because of the warm colors, the immense amount of daylight and beautiful playful shadows. The way it's build and the materials used make it truly unique (build based on the Fibonacci Sequence).
That they had an amazing experience and they would like to return again. That particular family came back already 6 times for 3 weeks each time!
That they leave completely recharged with good energy!
