Crete through the eyes of Manos
For me, Crete is not a destination, it is home. I spent every summer here in the family house, and to this day I feel a deep connection to this island. It’s in my roots, my memories, my taste. For Nice2stay, I recently visited several accommodations in Crete — and time and again I was touched by the combination of nature, history, and hospitality.
"Crete is raw, warm, vibrant, and deeply rooted. It’s not an island you visit, but one you truly experience."
Why Crete feels so special
It starts upon arrival: the scent of sea salt, the taste of fresh goat cheese, olive oil, and wild herbs. The warmth of the landscape — and the people. Time is experienced differently here. The rhythm is slower, deeper. Villages live through tradition, with music, dance, and food as their lifeblood.
And then there’s the rich history. The traces of the Minoan civilization are felt everywhere — from Knossos to the stories passed down locally. It gives the island an added layer of meaning.
My favorite places
-
Chania Old Town
One of the most beautiful old town centers in Greece. Full of Venetian, Ottoman, and Greek influences. Wandering here is a new experience every time. -
Elafonisi
A turquoise dream of a beach, with lagoons and pink-white sand. A paradise, especially on windless days. -
Rethymno
Charming old streets, small shops, lively squares, and stunning architecture. -
Elounda & Spinalonga
A mix of luxury and history. Beautifully located by the sea, with views of Spinalonga Island – once a leper colony, now a site of cultural heritage.
Nature & views
Crete is rugged and rich in natural beauty. From the peaks of Mount Psiloritis to the cliffs of the Samaria Gorge — you’ll be amazed at every turn.
Recommended:

A road trip from Chania to Elafonisi (the views are incredible!)
-
Hiking in the Samaria Gorge or Kourtaliotiko Gorge
-
Swimming at Preveli, Balos, Seitan Limania, and Vai Beach
Note: the wind plays a big role here. Always check the weather before planning a beach day.
Taste of Crete
Cretan cuisine is pure, rich, and deeply rooted in tradition.
-
Cheese pastries with honey – sweet, salty, and irresistible
-
Stamnagathi – a wild green, often served with lemon and olive oil
-
Goat dishes – flavorful stews, often prepared with mountain herbs
-
Snails – for the more adventurous eater
And don’t forget the raki. You’ll be offered some – always accept, it’s tradition.

Manos’ tips
-
Drive around the island. Each region has its own vibe and landscape.
-
Book restaurants in Chania in advance. It gets busy in high season.
-
Visit Elafonisi only on calm days.
-
Go early to Seitan Beach. Small and popular, especially in August.
-
Don’t rely blindly on Google Maps. Some routes aren’t suitable for regular cars.
-
Let yourself be surprised by village tavernas. That’s where you’ll find Crete’s true soul.
In conclusion
Crete is diverse, culturally rich, culinary, and naturally breathtaking. For those who love authentic travel, at a relaxed pace and with plenty of room for experience, this island is a treasure. And Nice2stay fits right in.
