Zakynthos: Greece at its greenest

Discover Zakynthos, one of the most beautiful Ionian Islands. Explore hidden beaches, charming villages, local tips and our handpicked holiday homes for an unforgettable Greek escape.

Turquoise bays, dramatic cliffs, hidden beaches and charming villages. Zakynthos is one of the best-known islands in the Ionian Sea, but beyond its famous postcard views lies an island full of authenticity, nature and relaxed Greek hospitality. At Nice2stay, we believe the best destinations are discovered in person. That's why our Product Manager Manos recently visited Zakynthos, exploring the island, meeting local homeowners and personally selecting the places that truly deserve a spot in our collection.

Why visit Zakynthos?

Unlike many of the Cycladic islands, Zakynthos is remarkably green. Olive groves, vineyards and fragrant pine forests stretch across the landscape, while the coastline alternates between impressive limestone cliffs, secluded coves and long sandy beaches. Whether you're looking for complete relaxation, beautiful nature or lively waterfront villages, Zakynthos offers the perfect balance.

The island's most beautiful beaches

No visit to Zakynthos is complete without spending time by the sea. Of course, there's the world-famous Navagio Beach (Shipwreck Beach), one of Greece's most iconic landmarks. While swimming access may occasionally be restricted depending on weather or safety conditions, the panoramic viewpoint remains one of the island's highlights. For swimming and relaxing, discover beaches such as:

  • Porto Limnionas
  • Porto Roxa
  • Gerakas Beach
  • Banana Beach
  • Dafni Beach
  • Agios Nikolaos Beach
  • Xigia Beach, known for its natural sulphur springs

Many smaller coves can only be reached by boat, making them perfect for a peaceful day on the water.

Discover Zakynthos by boat

One of the best ways to experience the island is from the sea. Take a boat trip along the dramatic west coast, explore the famous Blue Caves, swim in crystal-clear water or rent a small boat and discover hidden beaches at your own pace. If you're lucky, you may even spot the endangered Caretta caretta sea turtles, which return every year to nest on Zakynthos.

Charming villages worth exploring

Away from the coastline, Zakynthos reveals another side. Wander through traditional villages like Kampi, Keri, Volimes and Agios Leon, where you'll find family-run tavernas, local olive oil producers and spectacular viewpoints overlooking the Ionian Sea. For a lively evening, visit Zakynthos Town, with its elegant squares, waterfront promenade, boutique shops and welcoming restaurants.

A taste of Zakynthos

Greek cuisine is all about sharing, fresh ingredients and long lunches. On Zakynthos you'll find traditional tavernas serving grilled fish, homemade moussaka, local cheeses, fresh salads and excellent olive oil. Pair it with a glass of local wine while watching the sun set over the sea, and you'll quickly understand why visitors return year after year.

Great food is an essential part of any holiday, and Zakynthos has plenty of wonderful places to discover. From relaxed waterfront tavernas to contemporary Greek cuisine with breathtaking views, these are a few of our favourite addresses.

The best time to visit

Zakynthos is beautiful from May through October. Spring brings colourful wildflowers and pleasant temperatures, making it ideal for hiking and sightseeing. During summer, the island comes alive with beach clubs, boat trips and warm evenings outdoors. September and October are favourites among many travellers, with warm seas, fewer visitors and a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere.
