Be enchanted by the story behind this house, where minimalist design merges with a touch of luxury and promises an unforgettable experience for those who are guests here.
Before we dive into the details, can you briefly introduce yourself and your family members?
My name is Federica Beltrame and I am 47 years old. I am Italian and currently living in Bali with my family. My husband, Alejandro Angulo, is 44 years old, and we have three children: Sebastian (14 years old), Leon (9 years old) and Gael (also 9 years old). Our accommodation is called Casa Centofinestre.
We would love to share a bit about you as a person. Would you like to tell us more about yourself?
I worked for about 22 years as a gallery director in Beijing, China. However, since our move to Bali, my focus has shifted to regenerative design and activism. This fulfilling path allows me to explore and contribute to sustainable and harmonious living spaces on the sacred island of Bali. On the other hand, my husband Alejandro is the founder and creator of Salsation, a dance and fitness company. His passion for this leads him to travel the world. Together, we also have an eco-friendly clothing line for dancers.
When and in what way did Casa Centofinestre come into your life and what motivated you to make it a part of your life?
After dedicating most of our lives to working in China and taking every opportunity to travel in our spare time, the idea of creating a paradise arose when Sebastian was already 4 and I was pregnant with the second and third child, Leon and Gael, twin brothers. This dream was to create a place where, as the children grew up and went their separate ways, we could always come together - a warm and spacious home for the extended family. Whether there are five of us, the Italian grandparents, relatives from Venezuela, the children's significant others, the grandchildren and many more, Casa centofinestre embodies this dream, aiming to keep us all connected.
Can you tell us more about the process of renovating and furnishing Casa Centofinestre?
For the renovation project, I chose to work with Studio Pignattai Rabagli because of my great admiration for architect Marco Pignattai. His approach to renovation is particularly meticulous and sensitive. With a deep understanding of materials, he honours the signs of the times as integral elements of buildings. This approach fits perfectly with what I was looking for for a project aimed at preserving as much as possible the original appearance of the building after the necessary restoration. The house is a typical farmhouse, built in two parts. One part dates from the late 1600s and is characterised by long and slender bricks and small windows. The other part was built in the early 1800s, with larger and narrower bricks and larger windows. It has a rectangular shape with an external staircase, a common feature in the architecture of farmhouses in the Marches. The ground floor originally housed stables, while the upper floor served as living space, using the heat from the animals to heat the room above. We have preserved the original elements, including the walls, the external staircase and the fireplace, to respect and honour local architectural tradition. The spacious island kitchen is designed to fit into the former stable, filling an entire section of the space and overlooking the dining and living areas. This transforms the ground floor into a dynamic space to gather and experiment. We wanted to give the house a style and aesthetic that exudes a serene and inviting atmosphere. Our goal was to create a space that gracefully reveals its rich history, embraces imperfections while highlighting the beauty of modesty. The decor invites an understated and uncomplicated approach.
What makes Casa Centofinestre really special to you? Are there any special memories or moments that make it extra precious to you?
When we flew here from busy Beijing and our hectic life schedules, Casa Centofinestre represented our dream holiday and slowly became our dream home. My children spent every summer and Christmas there and grew so deeply into their Italian roots. They searched for footprints of wolves, chased hares and foxes, developed a love for nature and observed the changing of the seasons - in fact, they experienced an outdoor life lesson. The house is spacious, so everyone can find their own quiet corner. We have assembled a collection of table games so that both adults and children can enjoy playful moments. Casa Centofinestre is the name of our happiest memories. Each of us can't wait to come back here every year!
How would you describe the atmosphere and interior?
It stands as a simple rectangular house on top of a hill next to a tree, as if sketched by a child's pencil. The fascinating landscape, unique surroundings and location add to its special charm. The exceptional light, tranquillity and historical story woven into the thick walls and the neighbourhood make it an exceptionally special place. For the interior, we aimed to create a style and aesthetic for the house that exudes a calm and welcoming atmosphere. Our goal was to design a space that gracefully reveals its humble history, embraces the signs of the times and highlights the beauty of life on a farm. The furnishings reflect a thoughtful and simple approach.
Which part of Casa Centofinestre do you like best and why?
I used to love sitting on the roof and admiring the 360-degree landscape. But since my children started following me everywhere, I decided to stay grounded. I enjoy every nook and cranny of the house and its outdoor spaces. My children love to run in the spacious garden, climb in the tree house and jump in the pool. In spring, I enjoy the two pergolas, especially at 4pm when I sit with my tea or later with an aperitivo, and the golden light falls through the bamboo roof and filters through the tree branches. I feel calm and happy in every room of the house, from the lively kitchen where we all contribute to preparing food and drinks to the quieter living room with its typical and simple fireplace.
What makes the location where Casa Centofinestre is located unique and special?
Enchantingly situated among magical hills, the house offers a lively picture in every direction. Just a few minutes away are charming medieval villages such as Folottrano, Osimo, Jesi, Cingoli, Loreto, Recanati, where you can explore the local culture and discover crafts and delicious dishes. A twenty-minute drive will take you to Italy's most beautiful national parks and coastal areas: the Conero Park, admired for its white stones and turquoise beaches. Thirty minutes' drive on the other hand, the awe-inspiring Sibillini Mountains offer a unique breathtaking panorama of rugged peaks against the blue sky. A great destination for trekking enthusiasts, the Sibillini Mountains include lush meadows and dense forests, along with crystal clear lakes, waterfalls and enchanting medieval villages.
Are there any sustainable or eco-friendly applications associated with Casa Centofinestre that you are proud of?
The house has undergone a thorough renovation, with energy efficiency at the forefront. Solar and PV panels have been strategically placed on the roof. To minimise the impact on the environment, we implemented a water filtration and purification system, allowing water to be reused in the garden. With the exception of the floor, which is new, but environmental considerations were taken into account when choosing the floor. Most of the materials used in the house are existing and reused, contributing to a sustainable approach.
What motivated or inspired you to rent out your accommodation to guests?
When I enter Casa Centofinestre, the vibrant energy of friends and family fills every corner and brings the house to life. The choice not to leave it uninhabited during our time in Bali, where we are currently staying, was both a practical necessity and a genuine desire to share this enchanting experience with others.
Can you vividly describe the overall experience guests can expect during their stay?
A holiday at Casa Centofinestre is a journey into the heart of tranquillity and timeless beauty. Nestled among enchanting hills, we are fascinated by the picturesque landscape unfolding in every direction.
Upon entering, the warm embrace of the living spaces, decorated with carefully preserved original features, creates an immediate sense of connection with the region's rich history. The ambience is one of calm and simplicity, a space designed to gradually unfold its story. You will find century-old beams, handmade pillars that differ from each other and many other imperfect details that celebrate the modesty of the farmhouse.
The outdoor spaces are a pure poetic reflection of rural rhythm and country life - a vast garden where children can play, a tree house to explore and a pool to dive into. The two pergolas become sanctuaries, for rest or gatherings, providing the perfect setting for moments of relaxation and an aperitivo.
To explore the surrounding area, charming medieval villages are just a short drive away. The Conero Park beckons with its turquoise beaches and white stones, a serene escape to be enjoyed in both summer and winter. On the other side is the majestic Sibillini Mountains, offering breathtaking panoramas and hiking opportunities.
Casa Centofinestre is not just a place to stay; it is an immersive experience—a sanctuary for the soul, where the beauty of simplicity meets the richness of history. It invites you to unwind, connect with loved ones and create precious memories in an environment that feels like home from the moment you arrive.
