Liguria through the eyes of Denise Bondi

Denise Bondi, born in Rome, half Italian, and responsible for Italy at Nice2stay for the past nine years. She lived in Liguria for a while and became closely acquainted with the charm and character of this special region. During her most recent holiday, she returned – as both a traveler and a connoisseur – and rediscovered just how surprisingly diverse Liguria is. In this article, she shares her personal tips, favorite places, and her experience of the real Italy.

“Liguria feels to me like a well-kept secret by the sea – colourful, lively, and full of character.”

Discover the Cinque Terre… on foot
One of Liguria’s undisputed highlights is the Cinque Terre: five picturesque villages built into the rugged coastline. While most people explore this popular spot by train, I highly recommend walking (at least part of) the route—especially if you love nature and peace and quiet.
Scenic trails run along the coast, offering stunning sea views and glimpses of the colourful houses. We parked our car in a nearby town, hiked along the coast, and took the train back. It’s a great way to avoid the crowds, soak in the landscape at its best, and combine adventure with ease.

Genoa: a city full of surprises
Genoa, the capital of Liguria, is an underrated gem. It’s compact enough to explore on foot, yet rich in character. Narrow alleys, old palazzi, elegant squares – the city breathes maritime history.
It’s also a great destination for families, with one of Europe’s largest aquariums. Add to that a few playgrounds, cosy alleyways to get lost in, and plenty of gelaterias, and you’ve got a city full of charm and family-friendly appeal.

The flavours of Liguria
A visit to Liguria wouldn’t be complete without tasting its local cuisine. The famous pesto alla genovese, made with fresh basil, Parmesan cheese and pine nuts, tastes like nowhere else. Combine it with freshly caught seafood by the sea and a crisp white wine, and you’ve got an unforgettable meal.
Want to get off the beaten track? Drive inland into the hills, where you'll find quiet villages and small trattorias where time seems to stand still. This is where you’ll experience true Ligurian hospitality.

Why Nice2stay feels at home here
Liguria perfectly reflects our philosophy: small-scale, charming, and authentic. Our collection includes carefully selected accommodations—from cosy sea-view apartments to boutique hideaways tucked into the hills.
We personally visit every property, meet the owners, and choose only those places with soul and character. No mass tourism—just meaningful places and honest stories. Because in Liguria too, it’s all about real hospitality and unique experiences.

Practical tips: why Liguria is so appealing
Liguria is easily accessible: you can fly into Genoa, Pisa, or even Nice (France), and from there drive along the coast or into the hills. The region stretches lengthwise, making it easy to combine multiple destinations in one trip.
The climate is mild. You can go hiking or enjoy the sea as early as spring, while autumn is perfect for those who love peace, beautiful colours, and good food.

Denise’s tips for your trip to Liguria
  • Visit a local market. For fresh focaccia, olive oil, and regional cheeses.
  • Travel off-season. May and September offer great weather with fewer crowds.
  • Rent a car. That way, you can discover hidden hilltop villages and remote beaches.
  • Let yourself be surprised. Liguria is more diverse than most people expect – from rugged nature to elegant cities.

Final thoughts
Whether you're looking to hike, relax by the sea, or simply enjoy great food and beautiful views – Liguria will surprise and spoil you. It’s an ideal region for anyone who loves nature, culture, and the real Italy.
I warmly invite you to experience Liguria for yourself – through my eyes, but even more so, at your own pace.
