Meet the people behind the place - Il Borgo del Balsamico

Meet the driving force behind Il Borgo del Balsamico, a family business that combines traditional Italian balsamic vinegar with the charm of a historic estate. Together with her sister Silvia, she runs this special place where passion for authenticity, art, and nature come together. Discover the story behind this unique destination.

Can you briefly introduce yourself?

After a successful period in the family business Maska, my sister Silvia and I decided to take over our father’s passion for balsamic vinegar and turn it into a business. This is how Il Borgo del Balsamico was born. We developed a complete range of products and started selling them worldwide. In 2018, we decided to share the beauty of our estate with guests and opened our doors to travelers.

What more would you like to share about yourself? For instance, your interests, how you spend your free time, and the importance of family?

I am a creative and positive person, with a strong affinity for aesthetics. I enjoy classical music, jazz, and modern art. Nature fascinates me, especially flowers like roses, peonies, and dahlias. In fact, I see beauty in everything nature offers. As a child, I was very shy and never imagined I would become as open to people as I am now.

When did this property come into your life, and what made you decide to make it an important part of your life?

When my sister and I decided to establish Le Dimore del Borgo del Balsamico, it was a big step because we live here with our families. We work here and wanted to create a space that attracts people who share our values and sensitivities. We do not see ourselves as a hotel but as a place where guests can experience the beauty of the garden, the luxury of the old house, and the history of the estate. Passion, respect, and authenticity are the most important values to us.

Can you tell us more about the renovation and furnishing of the property?

The house was already a family home, so the renovation was relatively easy. We created different rooms and added some bathrooms, but we preserved the authentic atmosphere and original furniture as much as possible. Additionally, we incorporated modern pieces, much like in my own home. I treat the property as I do my house, which is reflected in the art and book collections throughout. You’ll also find sketches and photos from Maska, the fashion company.

What makes this property personally special to you? Are there any memories that make it particularly dear?

The entire house and estate are full of memories, both from the fashion business and my childhood. Every piece of furniture and every room tells a story, and we’ve decorated the space with elements that reflect our history. It’s truly a place that has grown with us.

How would you describe the atmosphere and interior of your property?

I would describe the atmosphere as cozy yet elegant. It’s a place that exudes warmth and luxury, while also being simple and full of stories. The interior is eclectic, blending modern and classic elements to enhance the character of the house.

Which part of your property is your favorite, and why?

The greenhouse by the pool is a spot I particularly enjoy, along with every corner of the Giardino all'italiana. It’s a place where I feel connected to nature, perfect for relaxation. Every corner has something unique to offer.

What makes the location of your property unique?

The rich history of the estate makes it very special. It was built at the end of the 18th century and has been owned by various families before my father purchased it for our family. The property also played a role during World War II; in 1945, a battle took place here.

Are there any sustainable initiatives associated with your property that you are proud of?

We do our best to protect nature by making our daily life more eco-friendly. For instance, we do not have air conditioning, and since last year, we have electric chargers available for guests. These are small steps, but they reflect our commitment to sustainability.

What was the main motivation for making your property available to guests?

The energy that guests bring when they enter the gate is incredibly inspiring. We love the joy they experience and the memories they take with them when they leave.

What can guests expect from their experience when staying at Il Borgo del Balsamico?

Imagine standing before a large painting that changes every day while listening to the music of the birds, both day and night. A word of caution: don’t come if you dislike night birds, as they add a unique atmosphere!

What makes your property different from others? What unique features make staying here special for guests?

At Il Borgo del Balsamico, guests experience the everyday life of an Italian family in a remarkable setting. We don’t feel like hosts with guests; we feel like friends sharing a special place.

What is the most memorable compliment you’ve ever received from a guest?

There have been many wonderful compliments, but one that stays with me is when a guest asked, “Do you know you’re living in paradise?” That was such a heartfelt compliment and meant so much to me.

What do you hope guests will take away from their stay?

I hope they take with them the people, passion, and style of our estate. These elements make it special for us, and we hope our guests feel the same.

Do you have any recommendations for guests to fully enjoy their holiday? Your tips will be shared on your accommodation’s page!

Absolutely! We recommend a hike in the Apennines to Pietra di Bismantova, a visit to the Collezione Maramotti in Reggio Emilia, and, of course, a delightful lunch with tortelli or cappelletti. End the day with a good book in the garden while enjoying the peace and quiet.
