Meet the people behind the place - Borgo Gelso

Tucked away in the heart of Salento, Borgo Gelso is a place where time slows down and authentic Italian life unfolds in its purest form. Behind its ancient stone walls, guests are welcomed into an oasis of citrus trees, sun-dappled courtyards, and quiet luxury. At Borgo Gelso, every stay promises a gentle rhythm of discovery, connection, and the simple pleasures of il dolce far niente.

Before we dive into the details, could you briefly introduce yourself?

My name is Elia, I have both Italian and German citizenship. I worked for more than 30 years in business consulting, mainly in Europe but also in Asia and the USA. I decided to retire in Puglia and, together with my wife Antonia (who has German citizenship), we opened a small "resort" called Borgogelso.

We would love to share a bit about you as a person with our customers. Would you like to tell us more about yourself?

I enjoy playing golf — in fact, not far from Borgogelso, there is a wonderful 18-hole golf course, Acaya Golf.
In addition, Antonia and I love salsa dancing, hiking, and swimming. We also own a "romantic" gozzo (an old fishing boat), which we like to take out along the coast, sometimes just the two of us, other times with friends or even with our guests.
Antonia and I were fortunate to be able to retire at 60 years old. Antonia worked in the IT sector, while I spent over 35 years in business consulting (Big 4), more than 20 of those years as a senior partner.

When and in what way did this property come into your life and what motivated you to make it a part of your life?

As we approached retirement, we were searching for a "buen retiro" — a peaceful retreat.
We considered several countries (France, Portugal, Italy) and ultimately decided that Salento in Puglia, Italy, was the perfect place.
The selection process was quite challenging because we were looking for an old masseria to renovate, with a garden and enough space for a swimming pool.
Additionally, we decided that our masseria should be located in a village or small city to enjoy all the advantages and amenities that come with village life.
After completing the renovation process, we decided to share the beauty of our home with other people — friends and guests alike.

Can you tell us more about the process of renovating and furnishing your property?

The renovation process of Borgogelso lasted almost four years (two of them during COVID).
It was quite complex, as the masseria is located in the center of town and was subject to strict regulations and inspections by authorities responsible for preserving the area's architectural heritage (Sovrintendenza alle Belle Arti).
For the renovation, we engaged a well-known architect, and for the furnishing, we partnered with an international interior design consultancy (Inside Stories).

On a personal level, what makes your property truly special for you? Any standout memories or moments that make it dear to your heart?

The location, the atmosphere you feel the moment you step inside the masseria, and the care and love we invested in every detail of the house.
We particularly cherish the contrast between the ancient architecture and the modern features such as Wi-Fi, heating and cooling systems, and home automation.

How would you describe the atmosphere and interior of your property?

When you step into Borgogelso, it feels like entering an oasis, enveloped by orange and lemon trees, and shaded by a centuries-old mulberry tree that offers coolness on the hottest Salento summer days.

Which part of your property do you love the most, and why?

The various terraces, which allow you to relax and find your own quiet spot even when the house is full of guests.

What makes the location where your accommodation is located unique and special?

Surano is a small village in the heart of Salento, offering all the basic services you might need — bakeries, supermarkets, grocery stores, bars, pizzerias, barbershops, and more.
It is a very quiet village where children still play in the streets.
At the same time, Surano is just a few kilometers (about a 10-minute drive) from Castro, with its beautiful sea caves, ancient castle, historic village, and stunning crystal-clear waters — a perfect mix of history, nature, and seaside beauty.

Are there any sustainable or eco-friendly applications associated with your property that you are proud of?

We have both photovoltaic and solar thermal systems installed to support sustainable energy use.

What motivated or inspired you to rent your property to guests?

The opportunity to meet interesting people from different countries and share the beauty of Salento with them.

Can you paint a vivid picture of the overall experience someone can expect when staying at your property?

A relaxing atmosphere, an opportunity to enjoy the surroundings, and the perfect base to explore the wider Salento region.

In what ways does your property stand out from others? What unique features or characteristics make it a one-of-a-kind experience for guests?

Our attention to detail, the unique feeling of staying in an ancient masseria combined with modern comforts, and the variety of experiences we offer — from kayaking, hiking, and boat excursions to cooking classes and yoga sessions.
All of this, paired with the quality of our beds and the thoughtful furnishings, creates a truly special stay.

Can you share the best compliment you've received from a guest?

One guest wrote:
"I don't often write reviews, but I felt I had to share how special Borgogelso is. We hired the entire house as a family of 10, and it is the most gorgeous property — beautifully decorated, with a magnificent pool and the most beautiful mulberry tree in the courtyard, which made it even more serene. The house was spotless and had everything you could ever need; so much care and attention has gone into this property that it almost feels too special to rent out. However, the hosts, Antonia and Elia, made our stay unforgettable by recommending local places to visit and eat, and even bringing us fresh cakes one morning — such lovely touches. I couldn't recommend Borgogelso enough, and we hope to return again next year."

What do you hope guests will take away or remember most from their stay at your accommodation?

Our hospitality and the warmth with which we welcome our guests.
We want them to feel truly at home and to leave with the desire to return.

Do you have any recommendations for guests to fully enjoy their holiday?

Come with an open mind and a desire to discover the local traditions, landscapes, and culinary specialties.
And above all, take the time to appreciate il dolce far niente — the sweet art of doing nothing.
