The most beautiful beaches in Puglia with white sand
Puglia’s coastline stretches for more than 800 kilometres, moving between limestone cliffs, sandy bays, dunes, and small fishing towns. In this article, the clearest white-sand beaches come into view, from the Ionian coast near Porto Cesareo to the dramatic limestone edges of the Gargano peninsula. Best visited early in the day or outside peak season, they offer pale sand, clear water, and some of the region’s most rewarding places to swim.
Punta Prosciutto, Porto Cesareo
Punta Prosciutto is one of Puglia’s clearest examples of a white-sand beach. The sand is fine and pale, the water is shallow and turquoise, and the shoreline is backed by dunes and Mediterranean scrub.
The beach lies within the Palude del Conte and Duna Costiera Nature Reserve, which has helped limit development in the area. Much of the beach is free to access, and the shallow seabed makes it a good choice for long swims and relaxed beach days.
Baia dei Turchi, Otranto
A few kilometres north of Otranto, Baia dei Turchi sits within the Alimini Lakes nature reserve. It is reached on foot through pine forest, before the path opens onto a sheltered bay with pale sand and clear Adriatic water.
The beach is protected by the FAI, Italy’s national trust, and facilities are limited. There are no large beach clubs or restaurants directly on the sand, so it is best to bring water and anything else needed for the day.
Torre dell’Orso, Melendugno
Torre dell’Orso is a crescent-shaped beach between two limestone cliffs. Its most recognisable feature is Le Due Sorelle, the two sea stacks that rise from the water just offshore.
The beach has fine pale sand and very clear water, but it is also one of the more popular beaches in Puglia. In July and August, it can become busy. For a quieter experience, head to the southern end of the bay or visit early in the morning.
Marina di Pescoluse, Salento
Marina di Pescoluse stretches for around four kilometres along the southern Ionian coast. The sand is fine and white, and the water remains shallow for a long distance, which makes it especially suitable for easy swimming.
The beach is often called the “Maldives of Salento”. While the nickname is overused, the water here is genuinely clear and calm. It is a practical choice for families, but also for anyone looking for a long, open beach with plenty of space outside peak season.
Baia delle Zagare, Gargano
Baia delle Zagare is located in the Gargano peninsula, between Vieste and Mattinata. It is known for its white cliffs, clear water and natural limestone arches just off the coast.
This beach has a more dramatic setting than the beaches in Salento and is often best experienced by boat. Trips from Vieste or Mattinata give the clearest view of the cliffs and arches, and make access easier during the busy summer months.
