An hour and a half south of Salzburg located on a hilltop just outside the village of Bad Gastein we discovered Haus Hirt Hotel & Aveda Spa. This elegant 33-room Alpine lodge is a creative, tasteful boutique family retreat where a stylish grandmother feels as at home as her digital grandchildren. The owner Evelyn, her architect husband Ike, and their incredibly friendly team give you a warm welcome and will pamper you with the unparalleled Hirt XL service, which feels so homely you will find it difficult to leave.
You stay here on a full board basis and can sit down in the beautiful dining room or on the sunny terrace for breakfast, lunch and a gourmet dinner. In terms of activities, everyone has been thought of ... while the younger children enjoy the imaginative daytime program and the teens swim in the panoramic indoor pool or chill out in their own space, you can enjoy a massage in the Aveda Spa followed by a drink in the cocktail lounge or the library. And everything is done with love and attention: if you want to go hiking, for example, there is a backpack with maps ready and you can take a picnic from the breakfast buffet.
The Gasteinertal is perfect for those who love hiking and nature. You will find 65 mountain huts and more than 600 kilometers of hiking trails. One of the reasons why Gastein is also recommended with smaller kids is that there are also flat plateaus such as the Sportgastein, where you can also take beautiful walks with a buggy. Are you a winter sports fanatic? Gasteinertal has 51 ski lifts, 200 kilometers of perfectly groomed ski slopes and with the daily ski bus from Haus Hirt you are on the slopes within ten minutes.

Bad Gastein was once know as the ‘Monte Carlo of the Alps’. Now it is the go-to for creative holiday-making, with the best the Alps have to offer: 300 days of sunshine each year, full of activities in the summer and an all-in-one winter sports destination in the winter. Haus Hirt is a 1.5 hour’s drive from Salzburg, with flights arriving from multiple European destinations and a broad range of trains. The beautiful Bad Gastein is a 10 minute stroll from Haus Hirt.
Enjoy the riches of the Alps in summer: Evelyn and her team would love to help you plan out a hiking trail (and will send you off with a picnic), you can mountain bike from the front door, play golf on a 9-hole (10min) or 18-hole (30min) course with stunning Alpine views, ride horses through the mountains (5min), or go down the adventurous route in a hot air balloon (1h) or go climbing through the mountains at the Alpine Society (1h).
Alternate the days when you go hiking in the Gasteinertal with a day of relaxing and swimming. Between Bad Hofgastein and Bad Gastein you will find Lake Gastein, which is a popular spot for cooling off on a hot day. The Solarbad in Dorfgastein is also a popular attraction for families. You will find both slides and saunas there. Not so fond of the slides? Then we have good news, because Gastein is known for the various thermal baths such as the Alpenthermen in the center of Bad Hofgastein and the Felsentherme in Bad Gastein. Here too, kids are welcome and you can swim in the thermal baths!
Bad Gastein transforms into a winter paradise each year: you can ski or snowboard on 200km of well-prepared slopes or go cross-country skiing (all a 10min shuttle ride from the hotel), ski-tours are available for those who want to venture up into the mountains, and winter hiking routes are available throughout the entire area.

Kids @ Haus Hirt
Evelyne and her husband Ike have a child of their own, and have designed Haus Hirt with families in mind. The entire family will feel completely at home here:
There is a day program for kids 3-12 years old, with games, crafts, swimming, and outdoor activities. There is a special kids dinner every evening at 6pm, so that parents can eat in peace.
The buffet lunch is a very relaxed affair from 1pm-5pm, and the kids can make use of it themselves.
Teenagers have their own space in Haus Hirt, where they can come together to...
