Meet the people behind the place - La Madrugada

In this exclusive interview, we get an inside look at the journey of the Van Straalen family from Utrecht, as they share the story behind their stunning property, La Madrugada, on the Northern Costa Blanca. From finding the perfect location to their sustainable renovation, they reveal what makes their home truly unique, offering guests an unforgettable experience of peace and beauty.

Could you briefly introduce yourself (and your family members, if applicable)?

We are the Van Straalen family from Utrecht, a family of five: Renate (51), Ritty (50), Jolie (19), Sam (16), and Liz (15).

Would you like to tell us more about yourself? For example, your interests, leisure activities, work, family, vacations?

We are an active family who loves sporty vacations and good food. We enjoy spending time with friends, discovering beautiful places, and engaging in activities together. Our interests lie in sports, travel, and enjoying great company.

When did the accommodation come into your life and what motivated you to make it a part of your life?

Three years ago, we were advised to visit the areas of Moraira, Javea, and Benissa. Until then, we hadn’t focused specifically on Spain, and we didn’t own a second home. We rented a house in Moraira and immediately felt comfortable, even though the weather wasn’t ideal. During our stay, we attempted to buy that same house, but the owner wasn’t ready to sell. We also visited several other houses and neighborhoods with agents, which gave us a clear picture of what we wanted. Eventually, we found La Madrugada, which had everything we were looking for: charm, spaciousness, perfect sun exposure, plenty of land, and a location within walking distance to the beach, restaurants, and a bakery.

Can you tell us more about the renovation and furnishing process of your accommodation?

Initially, we planned for a simple renovation and a new interior design. But soon we realized that we wanted to do it right the first time. Inspired by homes we had seen on the Nice2Stay website, we contacted a Belgian architect. Through her, we met Mirella Webbers from Under the Orange Tree Interiors, who helped us with both the interior design and construction management. She introduced us to a fantastic contractor, Cabo Verde from Javea, and together with them, we made many decisions on-site during the construction. The process lasted over 14 months, but the result was exactly what we had envisioned.

What makes your accommodation truly special to you? Are there special memories or moments that make it extra dear to you?

La Madrugada is a place that gives us the peace and warmth we were seeking. The house is special because of its many curves and organic shapes, the use of natural materials like microcement and wood, and the soft colors throughout. It is a place where we immediately feel at home, perfectly matching our love for mornings — hence the name, which means "the early morning."

How would you describe the atmosphere and interior of your accommodation?

The interior is warm, natural, and serene, with a focus on simplicity and quality. The house is furnished with materials like concrete, wood, and soft-toned paints. There are no harsh colors or sharp corners, but rather a peaceful, inviting ambiance. Inside and outside, there are plenty of wonderful spots to sit, eat, or relax, surrounded by a lush, mature garden.

Which part of your accommodation do you find the most beautiful and why?

Every part of the house and garden offers a view of the Mediterranean Sea, but the terrace next to the master bedroom is our favorite. From there, you not only have a stunning view of the sea, but also of the iconic Peñon de Ifach, a large rock that juts out into the sea.

What makes the location of your accommodation unique and special?

The northern Costa Blanca is not only beautiful, it’s a place where the mountains, vineyards, and charming coastal villages offer a unique experience every time. The area is full of picturesque walks and bike routes, with hidden gems of local restaurants and bars. Everything is within walking distance: from the beach to local shops and cafes.

Are there any sustainable or eco-friendly features of your accommodation that you are particularly proud of?

Yes, sustainability was very important to us. The house is off the grid and completely gas-free, with solar panels and a charging point for electric cars. We also installed a water filtration system, which eliminates the need for plastic bottles. Additionally, much of the construction waste was recycled and repurposed.

What motivated or inspired you to rent out your property to guests?

Unfortunately, we can’t always enjoy the house ourselves, so we love sharing it with others. We want guests to experience what makes this place so special. We also had great experiences renting through Nice2Stay, so we decided to offer our house there as well.

Can you give a vivid description of the total experience guests can expect during their stay at your accommodation?

From the moment guests arrive, they are struck by the view, the peaceful atmosphere, and the overall serenity. The pool sparkles in the sun, the chill-out area with an outdoor kitchen invites them for a drink, and there are numerous cozy spots to relax in, both in the sun and shade. Inside, the stylish bedrooms with linen bedding, air-conditioning, and ensuite bathrooms make for a comfortable stay. The fully equipped kitchen allows guests to prepare delicious meals, and the entire home exudes a perfect blend of authentic Spanish charm with modern comforts.

In what ways does your accommodation stand out from others? What unique features make it an unforgettable experience for guests?

The house combines traditional Spanish charm with modern comforts and sustainability. The location is perfect: just a short walk to the beach and local amenities, yet it remains peaceful and private. The panoramic views and the unique design of the house, with its organic shapes, make it especially memorable.

What is the nicest compliment you’ve received from a guest?

“It’s even more beautiful in person than in the photos” and “We felt at home the moment we arrived.” We often hear the word ‘WOW’ when guests first see the house and its breathtaking view.

What do you hope guests will take away or remember most about their stay at your accommodation?

We hope they love the place as much as we do and that they leave with lasting memories. La Madrugada is a place to unwind and create precious moments with family or friends.

Do you have any recommendations for guests to make the most of their vacation?

Yes, don’t just stick to the beaches. The surrounding countryside is beautiful, with hiking and cycling routes, charming villages, and local wineries. Rent a bike and explore the area, or visit a wine tasting to discover the local flavors.
