Meet the people behind the place - Vida na Vila en Vida na Aldeia

In this interview, we speak with Sara, the passionate owner of two unique accommodations in Southwest Portugal: Vida na Vila and Vida na Aldeia. Having left Lisbon for a new life surrounded by nature, Sara shares her journey, the inspiration behind her accommodations, and the special connection she has with the region. Join us as we explore her story and the essence of her spaces!

What is the name of your accommodation(s)?

The names of our accommodations are Vida na Vila and Vida na Aldeia.

Before we dive into the details, could you briefly introduce yourself?

My name is Sara. I’m Portuguese, originally from Lisbon. Many years ago, I changed my life to embrace a new path in Southwest Portugal, a region where the peaceful countryside meets the wild Atlantic Ocean. This coastal area is part of a natural park, rich in unique ecosystems and home to endemic species, some of which can only be found here.

We would love to share a bit about you as a person with our customers. Would you like to tell us more about yourself?

I run two tourism accommodations, one in the coastal town of Vila Nova de Milfontes and the other in the small rural village of São Luís. I also manage a ceramics workshop located in an old primary school, and I’m very involved in community work and activism projects. In my free time, I love traveling, reading, walking with my dog, surfing, and planting. Family and friends are a very important part of my life.

When and in what way did this property come into your life, and what motivated you to make it a part of your life?

This is my second tourism project. I sold my previous one more in the south, where I lived for eight years, to move further north, and to start a new chapter with my partner. So, I can say that I created Vida na Vila and Vida na Aldeia when I reorganized my life in the name of love.

Can you tell us more about the process of renovating and furnishing your property?

The renovation process was challenging, as it took place during the pandemic when everything slowed down or stopped, and prices soared. However, as always, I invested all my energy and commitment into these projects. The feedback has been really positive so far. I also organized the properties in such a way that they function independently of me, so I have more time to focus on my other jobs and projects. To summarize, tourism is not my ultimate goal; it's a means to support my life and allow me enough time to dedicate to the region where I live.

On a personal level, what makes your property truly special for you? Any standout memories or moments that make it dear to your heart?

Vida na Vila and Vida na Aldeia mean "Life in Town" and "Life in the Village." I think what makes these properties stand out is their privileged locations. Of course, i tried to make the properties themselves pleasant to spend time there, but what is truly special is the region they are located in—Southwest Portugal.

How would you describe the atmosphere and interior of your property?

I love creating fresh and cozy atmospheres, as well as incorporating craftsmanship. So, I would say that this is what I offer in both properties.

Which part of your property do you love the most, and why?

I absolutely love their locations because they allow guests to experience authentic local life.

Are there any sustainable or eco-friendly applications associated with your property that you are proud of?

I believe I have the basics that anyone should have nowadays: solar panels, waste separation, raising awareness of the current water scarcity, and the use of local food products.

What motivated or inspired you to rent your property to guests?

Running my small business has allowed me to give back to the region where I live through my voluntary work in associations and activism.

Can you paint a vivid picture of the overall experience someone can expect when staying at your property?

There’s something special about Southwest Portugal that is hard to describe in words, but once you’re touched by it, you’ll never forget how this place makes you feel. So, it’s not just about my properties; it’s about the region itself.

Do you have any recommendations for guests to fully enjoy their holiday? Your valuable tips will be featured on your accommodation's page!

I highly recommend walking the Rota Vicentina, including the Fishermen’s Trail and the Historical Way—you will never forget it.
