Meet Alessio, the founder of Casa Piana in Puglia. After living in London for many years, he returned to his roots and created a place that is both modern and authentic. In this interview, he shares his personal journey, the renovation of Casa Piana, and what makes it so special for him and his guests.
Casa Piana
I’m Alessio, currently based in Puglia. With an international background, six years ago I decided to return to my roots after living in London. I wanted to create my own space—somewhere I could truly feel at home. From this desire, Casa Piana was born.
I’m the founder of Burro Café in Ostuni, Puglia. After five years in London, where I studied business and marketing and worked as a real estate agent, I developed a deep passion for hospitality. Feeling drawn back to my roots, I returned to Puglia to start my own project. I honed my skills managing Moroseta Homes, a collection of exclusive properties in the region, bringing the same care and dedication to Burro. My journey with Burro Café is driven by my love for food and my desire to create a space where people can connect—not just to eat, but to share meaningful moments.
After many years in London, I returned to my hometown in Puglia in 2018. A few months later, I found a small building just outside the historic center of Nardò. Its exterior was simple and clean, but the interior had a strong structure with plenty of potential. The space featured generous rooms, a unique angular window, beautiful "margherita" vaults, and a terrace overlooking the village rooftops. It was a mix of elements that immediately felt right, and I knew it was the one.
The decision to work with Studio Palomba Serafini came naturally. I wanted a modern approach that still respected the existing space and its surroundings. The restoration was thoughtful and balanced, yet unconventional. Our first meeting was pivotal; Ludovica and Roberto's vision was clear, practical, and perfectly aligned with mine.
Casa Piana is my domestic nest; crossing its threshold means leaving behind the daily hustle and bustle. The art of idleness, the suspension of time, the peace. The space features a balance of private rooms and shared areas, with natural light as a key design element. Local materials have been used in the renovation, some left intentionally unfinished. The interior colors, mainly bone, cream, and white, reflect the natural tones found in Puglian architecture.
Definitely the kitchen, here is where I spend most of my time. I really love cooking and sharing those moments with my family and friends.
I believe Casa Piana has something special, and for this reason I like to share its soul and its beauty with other people.
