Meet the people behind the place - Little Dolce Trullo

Little Dolce Trullo is an authentic trullo with a modern twist, located in the idyllic Puglia region. Joelle, along with her partner Riccardo and their two children, created this unique retreat where tranquility, nature, and luxury come together. In this interview, Joelle shares her inspiring story, renovation journey, and passion for the region, offering guests an unforgettable experience.

Before we go into the details, could you briefly introduce yourself?

I’m Joelle, 39 years old, and I’ve been living in Puglia, Southern Italy, since 2014. I previously ran a B&B in the historic center of Lecce for 10 years, but with the arrival of our twins, Noah and Jolie (3.5 years old), I felt it was time for something new. I live in a characteristic building in Lecce with my partner Riccardo (43). In early 2024, we opened our Little Dolce Trullo, an authentic trullo with an extension, located in Ostuni.

We would love to share more about you with our guests. Would you like to tell us more about yourself?

Now that I no longer run a B&B, I spend more time with my family. I enjoy going to the beach with the twins, where they play in the sand for hours, even in winter. Living in Southern Italy has taught me to embrace the slow-living principle: enjoying small moments like a coffee in the sun. Despite a busy schedule, I maintain balance by dedicating time to my family, the household, and the Italian dolce vita.

When and how did the accommodation come into your life, and what motivated you to make it a part of your life?

Six years ago, I wanted to start something new alongside my B&B. I had dreamed of owning a trullo for years. One Sunday, we were driving around when I spotted one for sale. Even without seeing the inside, I knew this was the one! Riccardo immediately called the owner, and soon we had bought the land. The process was intense with delays due to COVID-19, but I learned to be patient. Now, six years later, it feels like a dream come true.

Could you tell us more about the renovation and interior design process of your accommodation?

The renovation was a challenge. The trullo required extensive repairs, and we added an extension. This took time due to permits and bureaucracy, but luckily, I had a fantastic contractor who understood my style. I consciously chose materials and furniture from Puglia to support the local economy. Although I went far over budget, everything was decorated with love and passion, and that shows in every detail.

What makes your accommodation truly special to you? Are there any special memories or moments that make it particularly dear to you?

What makes Little Dolce Trullo so special is that it was built with love and respect for Puglian culture. Even the stone walls are built traditionally without cement, a nearly forgotten craft. Everything exudes authenticity and craftsmanship, giving the house a unique charm.

How would you describe the atmosphere and interior of your accommodation?

The atmosphere is typically Mediterranean: natural materials like stone, wood, linen, and cotton, in warm tones. The interior exudes authenticity and simplicity, combined with a touch of modern luxury. The exterior perfectly complements this, with natural colors and an idyllic setting.

What part of your accommodation do you find the most beautiful and why?

The authentic part of the trullo remains my favorite. Here, where six people once slept, now stands a kingsize bed and a luxurious bath. This space radiates history, combined with contemporary luxury. I also enjoy the pool with a children's section and the traditional fireplace that creates a cozy atmosphere in the winter.

What makes the location of your accommodation unique and special?

The trullo is located between Carovigno and Ostuni, close to both towns yet wonderfully peaceful. The hectare of land is surrounded by over a hundred olive trees, a vineyard, and fruit and nut trees. It offers an oasis of tranquility, while you can be in the town within five minutes. The view from the terrace over the vineyard and olive trees is absolutely magical.

Are there sustainable or eco-friendly features connected to your accommodation that you’re proud of?

The pool is intentionally kept small to save water, and we will soon install solar panels. Additionally, I have repurposed antique accessories such as vases to create an authentic look. By choosing local products and sustainable options, I love contributing to the nature and economy of Puglia.

What motivated or inspired you to rent out your property to guests?

I want to introduce my guests to my Puglia. After living here for more than 11 years, I know all the best spots, from beaches and wine bars to small villages and traditional restaurants. I love sharing my tips tailored to what guests want to experience. This way, I help them discover the pure Puglia beyond the usual tourist hotspots.

Could you provide a vivid description of the total experience guests can expect during their stay at your accommodation?

Upon arrival, guests are warmly welcomed with a local wine and taralli. The trullo combines the authentic atmosphere of Puglia with modern luxury: from a luxurious bath to a cozy fireplace. Outside, the garden, pool, and covered terraces with a traditional BBQ await. Thanks to its strategic location, guests can easily explore the region while experiencing peace and privacy on the property. Whether it’s a walk through Ostuni, a visit to local wineries, or an evening under the stars, everything contributes to an unforgettable experience.

In what ways does your accommodation stand out from others? What unique features make it an unforgettable experience for guests?

Little Dolce Trullo combines authentic heritage with modern comfort. Think of an ancient trullo that has been beautifully restored, with luxurious amenities such as a kingsize bed, air conditioning, and a private pool. You also receive personalized tips to explore the best of Puglia. Guests don’t just leave their holiday home—they take a unique experience with them.

What is the nicest compliment you have received from a guest?

One guest once said: "Your eyes light up when you talk about Puglia." That feeling of passion and enthusiasm is noticed and appreciated. It motivates me to share this experience time and time again with others.

What do you hope your guests will take away or remember most from their stay at your accommodation?

I hope guests not only leave relaxed but also carry the authenticity and beauty of Puglia with them. Whether it’s the local food, the warmth of the region, or the unique charm of the trullo, I hope they felt at home here and look forward to a return visit.
