Little Dolce Trullo is an authentic trullo with a modern twist, located in the idyllic Puglia region. Joelle, along with her partner Riccardo and their two children, created this unique retreat where tranquility, nature, and luxury come together. In this interview, Joelle shares her inspiring story, renovation journey, and passion for the region, offering guests an unforgettable experience.
I’m Joelle, 39 years old, and I’ve been living in Puglia, Southern Italy, since 2014. I previously ran a B&B in the historic center of Lecce for 10 years, but with the arrival of our twins, Noah and Jolie (3.5 years old), I felt it was time for something new. I live in a characteristic building in Lecce with my partner Riccardo (43). In early 2024, we opened our Little Dolce Trullo, an authentic trullo with an extension, located in Ostuni.
Now that I no longer run a B&B, I spend more time with my family. I enjoy going to the beach with the twins, where they play in the sand for hours, even in winter. Living in Southern Italy has taught me to embrace the slow-living principle: enjoying small moments like a coffee in the sun. Despite a busy schedule, I maintain balance by dedicating time to my family, the household, and the Italian dolce vita.
Six years ago, I wanted to start something new alongside my B&B. I had dreamed of owning a trullo for years. One Sunday, we were driving around when I spotted one for sale. Even without seeing the inside, I knew this was the one! Riccardo immediately called the owner, and soon we had bought the land. The process was intense with delays due to COVID-19, but I learned to be patient. Now, six years later, it feels like a dream come true.
The renovation was a challenge. The trullo required extensive repairs, and we added an extension. This took time due to permits and bureaucracy, but luckily, I had a fantastic contractor who understood my style. I consciously chose materials and furniture from Puglia to support the local economy. Although I went far over budget, everything was decorated with love and passion, and that shows in every detail.
What makes Little Dolce Trullo so special is that it was built with love and respect for Puglian culture. Even the stone walls are built traditionally without cement, a nearly forgotten craft. Everything exudes authenticity and craftsmanship, giving the house a unique charm.
The atmosphere is typically Mediterranean: natural materials like stone, wood, linen, and cotton, in warm tones. The interior exudes authenticity and simplicity, combined with a touch of modern luxury. The exterior perfectly complements this, with natural colors and an idyllic setting.
The authentic part of the trullo remains my favorite. Here, where six people once slept, now stands a kingsize bed and a luxurious bath. This space radiates history, combined with contemporary luxury. I also enjoy the pool with a children's section and the traditional fireplace that creates a cozy atmosphere in the winter.
The trullo is located between Carovigno and Ostuni, close to both towns yet wonderfully peaceful. The hectare of land is surrounded by over a hundred olive trees, a vineyard, and fruit and nut trees. It offers an oasis of tranquility, while you can be in the town within five minutes. The view from the terrace over the vineyard and olive trees is absolutely magical.
The pool is intentionally kept small to save water, and we will soon install solar panels. Additionally, I have repurposed antique accessories such as vases to create an authentic look. By choosing local products and sustainable options, I love contributing to the nature and economy of Puglia.
I want to introduce my guests to my Puglia. After living here for more than 11 years, I know all the best spots, from beaches and wine bars to small villages and traditional restaurants. I love sharing my tips tailored to what guests want to experience. This way, I help them discover the pure Puglia beyond the usual tourist hotspots.
Upon arrival, guests are warmly welcomed with a local wine and taralli. The trullo combines the authentic atmosphere of Puglia with modern luxury: from a luxurious bath to a cozy fireplace. Outside, the garden, pool, and covered terraces with a traditional BBQ await. Thanks to its strategic location, guests can easily explore the region while experiencing peace and privacy on the property. Whether it’s a walk through Ostuni, a visit to local wineries, or an evening under the stars, everything contributes to an unforgettable experience.
Little Dolce Trullo combines authentic heritage with modern comfort. Think of an ancient trullo that has been beautifully restored, with luxurious amenities such as a kingsize bed, air conditioning, and a private pool.
